A Guide To Buying Your First Green Laser

Thanks for putting together this FAQ. I'm one of those noobs you addressed in the introduction! :)
I'm going to change the red laser to green in a presentation pointer - and since it's for conference room presentations I can't use a 50mw laser. I needed guidance on a reliable, quality, and NOT overspec'd pointer. Thanks to this FAQ I just purchased a WL Core from Guitmath on eBay: $44 shipped.

Of course, my next laser will be more expensive and more powerful!
Thanks, again, from the noob crowd.

The way I see it, I will only buy 5mW lasers from ebay. The higher ones may be modded to be higher power, or not really that high power. Thats just a chance though, you may get a good one. But if I stick with 5mW, chances are its not modded or said to be a higher power. The only thing I can see happening is it being poorly made. So again 5mW=cheaper=less of a loss. I believe my chances are better this way, still not full proof but better. Anything higher than 5mW I will stick with O-like and other good companies. I do not have much experience buying/lasers dying on me, but I still think its a good theory. :yh:

Btw, good guide. :p

Yes, thanks!

I've wanted a real laser since I was a kid, and just recently decided to get one (now that we can all have one)! I am very happy to have found this post. As we know, it's a little frustrating and confusing researching specialty items on the 'net.

After a day or so of Googling and researching, and after seeing this post, I finally decided on a 400mW RPL green from Optotronics. All things considered (including price, features, specs, payment methods, reviews), these seem a much better choice than the other sellers. This 400mW with all it offers (plus a pair of glasses) is $400 less than the 300mW Spyder II GX at WickedLasers.

This is a very good forum. After I get mine and play with it awhile, I'll come back and let you know about it!

Thanks and kind regards to all-

That's probably the best decision you'll make in your entire life.

Knowing Opto, there's a good chance that laser will peak over 500mW.

Ah, and true to his reputation for great service, I've heard from Jack since I placed my order. He wrote to be certain I wanted black or silver, then he wrote again to let me know that the one he is shipping peaked in a test @ >470mW, and averaged ~440mW. Then to let me know it shipped.

Yeah, I'm pretty certain I'll be happy with this choice.

There's no way I can compare a green laser to a BR. They are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. You will have to do some research and decide which kind suits you best. What are you looking for in a laser? Visable beam? Better burning?

i want a laser that burns fast and has a cool beam, like the blu-ray but i was told green bream is brighter so thats why im having a hard time deciding.

Well, then it's up to you. Blu-rays are incredible burners, but a 100+mW green is still pretty fast. And consider getting/making a 6x laser (it's a 200mW BR in case you didn't know). Awesome burning+pretty visible beam. I wouldn't even consider an 80mW blu-ray pen for burning, considering you can focus it and it has poor heatsinking.

well i only got like $65 to spend on a BR laser, and the one i want is focusable....

Here's my advice: save up more money. You're not going to get a good burner for $65. And if you look, you'll see there was a review on the laser you want, and I remember it wasn't very positive. Even if you have to save up for a few more months, it'll be worth it.

This one is awesome. Over 100mW of green, focusable, battery included (18650!), and for only $88.
