The reflection is a very likely cause of death, sorry to hear about the $200 loss. Even if only 5% of the light was reflecting back into the laser, if the laser is 400mW that is 20mW being focused to a tiny point by the lens right on the die, and on top of that there is still the stress of the laser running.

I was talking about Tabish you tool. And for my own defense you don't see me giving out much laser advice....do you? I'm on here reading and discussing 6 times a week with over 1500 post and I'M still a n00b. This is why I troll. In fact I lurked a few weeks before I even signed up, so I would at least know a little of what I'm talking about. So say what you want about me, I could care less, but I have put in the time and I don't talk out of my ass. Unlike your buddy Tabish....
 
I don't even really know the guy but you quoted me, looks like you were talkin to me. I know you troll a lot, I've seen it. Far as me gettin laid, it's regular thing but I could always use a little more ;)

Why don't you guys just help these new people? I can see it if they are being stupid about it or can't even spell cat or troll posting some random crap. If someone seriously wants to learn though or has a question, wouldn't it just be easier to put the answer there for them? I've seen a lot of links that don't work or the information just isn't here on this forum to find. It'd be easier to just help someone than to just belittle them or whatever and if they're wrong just correct them. I'm not suggesting anyone kiss anybody's ass or anything but c'mon. We've all been wrong a time or two, I damn sure have. For a scientific community forum that's what I'd expect, at the least.

We do. All the time. However, we require a bit of effort on their part as well. You see we write up well thought out responses and leave them here for anyone to search up and find. Sometimes we will answer the same question again. However, after the eleventy thousandth time answering questions that are all answered many places in the forum, we start to require that you find the answer your self.

Until a new member has read enough (at least all of the stickies) That member not only doesn't know what is available in the forum, they aren't even capable of framing their question well enough to get a good response.

Hang out for awhile. Get to know us. Be genuine and honest. You will learn so much your head will explode ;)

Reflection is a possible cause. Usually glass doesn't give enough reflection (like mirrors). The glass may have given you enough if the diode was already operating near the edge.

Beyond that, I believe that this is the first one that has died without a "known" cause. So a couple of quick questions if you don't mind:

Do you have an estimate of the total time on the diode?

Did you observe any consistent "duty cycle"?

Do you remember what the current and output were?

Were there any "issues" during harvesting or installing?

think there is a slight confusion. the reflection wasnt off of the glass. it was off of the liquid surface of the beer. The beer was perfectly stable on a table top with the pointer being directed downwards into the beer. It was just sitting on top of it without movement.

edit: sorry i didnt answer your questions. I do however feel it was a direct result of a perfect reflection back into the diode. but diode was driven at 360mA with maybe less than a total of 30 minutes life (always with equal cool down times). No telling the output (no meter). No issues in harvesting. extremely minimal contact with a hot soldering iron. No broken glass or pins.

About the laser reflection. When is more light reflected back? When the angle of incidence is 0 degrees (as in this case) or when its greater?

yep. You're right. the most light is reflected back to the source when i = 0. 100% of the light is only reflected straight back to the source when it is "normal" to the reflecting surface (under theoretical perfect reflection). Where i = i'. In essence the incident and the reflective ray are completely immersed in one another.

edit: not sure if i addressed your question correctly. but the same amount of light is reflected regardless of the angle of incidence (under perfect conditions).

I think that the beer would absorbe, pass and reflect the light at the same time. Also the chance that the beam would reflect exactly back into the laser is minimal.
Beer isn't just for breakfast and I don't believe it was responsible for the LED event.
I have a lot of LED's asking "WHY".............. "What Happened"?
An amber bottle is not a likely cause either because the fluid, nor the bottom of the bottle is an efficient FS mirror.
