650-660nm Mits laser diodes

I'm not set up to fabricate this board. If you can do it or know someone who will do it I would be interested in about 5 of them to start. I can come up with the parts, but the board, that's another story. It's been years since I was fabricating PCBs and don't have any of what is needed to do it.

I can't, sorry - not up for manufacturing things. But you can do - to do it really cheaply only takes an oven, and $3 worth of solder paste from eBay ;)

However, there's a problem with my design that just occurred to me. Well, actually, the design is fine, but the diode we're powering creates a problem. The diode's Vf is under 3V, and the ZXCT needs 3V to run, so we're probably going to see bad behavior here (or no regulation at all because the ZXCT won't have enough juice to operate). Two possible solutions:

1) Instead of the ZXCT, use the MAX4172, which has a dedicated pin for pulling its own V+ power supply from the battery, pre-LM1117

2) Try moving the ZXCT to pre-LM1117 itself. Since the driver is linear, this might work. But it might not, and I've never tried it.

I like option 1 best.

Anyway, I'm off to bed. I don't actually need this circuit, so I'm not going to make any. But if others want to make use of it, that's okay with me. Fix the ZXCT issue from 2 posts up though, especially if planning to use this for diodes with Vf's around (or under) 3V.

Having quickly glanced at DigiKey offerings, I think I'd probably actually swap out the ZXCT for one of the following two chips (both of which take a voltage input from pre-regulator, so that the Vf of the LD doesn't impact whether they have the 3V they need to run:

- MAX4073T/F/H
- SC310
 
rhd, yeah, the LD is driven by Vf=2.5 volts max. I will look into what you have described and see if I can make it work, but in the mean time, I must deal with what I have to get some of these builds off my plate. Thanks, man. Maybe after the day is over we can talk about it some more. :p Paul

Thank you for the tip! I just bought two of these and I have a host sitting around that will fit one nicely. I only need one of these diodes, but considering open can red laser diodes HATE me I decided to get a second as a backup.
 
Thank you, LS. I sent for a price and what quantities need to order to get each price break. Maybe it could be worth either stocking, or having a group buy. I will let you know what I learn. ;) Paul
 
Just bought two of these guys. I can add them to my growing collection of red diodes.

2 x LPC-826
2 x GGW 660
2 x LPC-840*new*

Why I need all of these I will NEVER know. I have more diodes than hosts and no host budget in the current foreseeable future.
 
Isaac, yeah, I've got about 20 red laser diodes and not nearly enough hosts for them all. I just like red diodes and I will eventually use them in something. I've got two of those cheap FASTTECH flashlight builds in the process. One is for me, and the other is for Jeff ( vortish ). Hope to have them both finished this weekend. I've also got another LPC-840 coming for a build for another forum member. Then I have my 2 watt Nichia build I'm putting in an MS Envy. So, I've got plenty to keep me busy. :)

1x 6W 445nm Diode w/ Driver(no host yet. In progress)

So as you can see I am in a similar boat. Only one completable project. And flexdrives are expensive lol.
 
Just heard back from Mitsubishi and they are not giving these diodes away by any stretch of the imagination. They want $12.00 each for 10 units. That is not as good as the ten on eBay for $99.99. To match that price we would have to buy 50 units. Now if anyone wants 100 units the price drops to $8.00 each. Personally, I would be more inclined to buy off of eBay and get ten units for $100.00.
 
bdgreenb, come to think about it, yeah, that would work, too. I already took two off of one of these drivers and they stick pretty close to 350mA out per driver I.C. I needed something with a little less current and found that a 2.2 ohm resistor in series with the negative lead to the laser diode (though t probably doesn't make a difference which side you put it on) gives me about 300mA instead of the 350mA.

Out of curiosity, why not just use a flexdrive?
