These 635 nm lasers are similar in colour to the 632.82 nm line of the Helium–Neon laser. Nobody calls the red He-Ne orange! You can clearly see this once you compare it to the orange 611.80 nm line (3s2 -> 2p6) of the He-Ne. These diodes are orangish red, but still red. I bought a 400 mW of these diodes once and was a bit disappointed because I didn't know that the mode pattern was squarish, it was not the beautiful round TEM_00. But still quite brighter than the ~650 nm diodes.

ok so how would the brightness and beam/ dot quality of a 400mw 405nm compare to these,,, it is also a color i wish to add to my collection..

405 has very dim dot and almost no beam. Very deceptive in judging power level looking at beam brightness.

I have a 638nm measured at 415mW and it's the brightest "dot" in my collection. Brighter than 1.1W of 445nm. The beam on the other hand is equivalent to some 50mW of green, maybe less. But it's a hell of a lot more visible than a 650nm beam.

I never liked the "orange" description of 635nm. Sure, it's "oranger" than 650nm, but not orange in the least. It looks more cherry red, whereas 650nm looks more like blood red.

One thing to remember with the 635nm (638nm) vs 650nm is that the 635nm is both inherently brighter to the human eye, and can scale to higher powers than the 650nm lasers. So if you want a bright laser, the 635nm lasers will be the best choice.

405nm is the dimmest of all the lasers at a given mW. Your eyes don't pick up violet very well at all. It's still a neat wavelength, and the spot looks really bright if you hit a fluorescent surface, but don't expect a bright beam.

635 looks like tomato red to me. 650 more like cherry.

I see some orange in the 638nm. It is a very warm color compared to the 660nm. I call 638nm orangish red and 660nm is dark red.
The shot is taken with two lasers and a separation in between. So the camera setting is the same for both lasers.

And another picture to back this up :)

650 left 635 right next to it.
