$600 473nm diodes






There are all sorts of diodes out there. I once took a look at a company's stock list and there was a diode for every 1 or 2nm all the way from low UV to deep red. I stopped looking after visible wavelengths ended. Asked for a quote on 497 but they wanted a lot of info to even give me a quote so I politely excused myself.
 
"You have a 473nm diode? Thats cute. I killed one of the first four available on purpose."

Well maybe we don't need to, but so what. The point is to get one over here with real world tests to the community.

If they have a datasheet and they came directly from nichia, then I can only assume these arent one offs. They must be a new diode they are beginning to manufacture, and they csn apparently be bought for reasonable prices at some quantity. Hopefully we will see more soon.

Plus what if datasheet says 20mw absoluted max but it doesnt pop until 75mw and at around 60mw its shifted to a nice 485nm.

Awesome. I can't wait to see some 473nm pen builds that don't use that ugly CNI CR2 "fat" host. :D
 
Do any of you wavelength collectors have beam-comparison shots of a 473nm vs a 488nm?
I am determined to get one, after a new car, and want some idea of what to look for so I can make the choice.

Also, do the ion 488s come only as the high-dollar multi-line variety, or are there single-line ions out there in 488nm?

Yep! Though I'm not entirely sure whether single- or multi-line argon lasers are more common.

Daguin had a few single line Argon's at 488nm a couple months ago for sale... try asking him. Aound $100-$200 for one :beer: I think single line is more common on the cheap side :p
 
Oh, if I can get a single-line 488 for a couple of hundred $, I am all in!

I have a 35mW SL 488 that I could compare to a 100mW 473, and a 100mW 455.

That other picture did the trick though :p

I'm usually all for a murder fund for new diodes but it seems silly and honestly a bit stupid, a a waste of money to kill a $600 for a known wavelength.

AFAIK it'd be pretty much impossible (or insanely expensive at the least) to repackage a ML argon into a diode. Any how since someone asked for comparison pics of 473 vs 488 here's a couple I took recently. 488 diodes are single wavelength.

473 is on the left and 488 on the right. The 589 appears way more orange than it actually is.
 
Thank you, LtKernelPanic. I had no illusions to a multi-line diode, as I am not even aware that it could exist.
I was merely looking for a comparison. I like the 473, but when dollars come into being a factor, I have to pick one. After re-viewing the beamshots here and elsewhere, it seems a 488 is in my future, before a 473 is.
Unless I can somehow get a new car and magically afford a >100mW multi-line system.
