476nm / 480nm diode build by styropyro REVIEW (pic HEAVY)

Good picture! Yeah that divergence is awesome, I can't think of any other laser (without a beam expander) that I've messed with that kept a tighter beam.

I can't wait to build my next 480nm handheld!

476/480nm handheld arrived from Styro today, this is a nice unit.

Pics forthcoming, I'm going to try to get a 473/480/488 distinguishing shot but it's gonna be tough :)

I would think that there may actually be uses for 488 diodes (vs this) for cyto/medical/science uses; so maybe we'll see the wavelength walk into that range as far as available diodes go (I hope.)

I hope indeed! Last I checked, a 200mW 488 diode was somewhere around 10k? Little bit over my budget :p

If I had the money to put into handhelds, you'd have seen an orange by now and you know it.

At least I'm working on an ML HeNe handheld :p
 
Unfortunately i do know that... but orange handhelds, at least <615nm, still exceed $3k after order, shipping expenses, customization and fitting to host... and I will not spend that much.

You know there's a certain little diode, needing a certain little temperature, for a certain little $550. However you are right along the lines of <615. Though perhaps work could be done about that.

I'll see what our friend has in his mad dungeon that could suit the requirements. With excessive cooling, comes excessive blue shift.

I've done my homework on that diode ;)

I don't like the possibility of condensation considering it needs to be -5C for 615nm to have even a chance of reality. Though I dunno if it was ever spectro'd

Yes, that could be an issue. There was some talk about that, actually, in a thread I posted someone recommended using a desiccant like used in gas lasers to prevent moisture.

I could easily seal the laser diode, and lens once aligned, in an internal pill. Then have a glass window at like b-angle to prevent reflection.

Gas laser technology + cryo laser diode = beast of a handheld.
 
Of course, its actually pretty much complete if I remember correctly...

I'm also gonna want that too if it can get a good seal on it. Though warm-up time would suck waiting for those TECs
