405nm 5mW Electra LaserGlow

Most diodes are not exactly on their nm level. for example, Dragonlasers calls their 1W blues 447nm+/- 3nm. so could be in the range of 444nm-450nm. 445nm is what we here call 'em

some would consider 594nm yellow orange, but these are low powered and pricy. IMHO, yes 638 is for most intents and purposes, the closest to orange you'll find in a pointer

My Libra says exactly this:

Wavelength: 635nm

And it even has 635nm with the "wave" symbol engraved on top.

Knowing LG this must truly be 635nm?
 
620-ish diodes have existed (one LPF member even had one) - but they were very expensive, multimode, and very temperature sensitive (needed cooling.)

We talked to some companies earlier this year and again they do exist, but we're really talking $5000 for a diode in a weird packaging, usually multimode.

So it's possible but I'm guessing the demand isn't driving the price down and likely won't be any time soon. I'd love to see CNI provide some DPSS process for it in a PGL-C, but they don't seem interested in that, either.

Greenlander: At that power, probably yes. As "635s" go up in power they tend to walk in wavelength towards 650, but even 20mW would bring you to like 637, so I'd say yes, likely 635.

One member posted a thread asking for 2 Class II orange laser pointers in the range of 600-620nm and wanted to spend less then $200 :whistle:

For your Libra, it is likely to be outputting closer to 634nm than 638nm, as driving the diode harder will shift the wavelength up, and underdriving will shift the wavelength down. So it is likely you have a laser right around 635nm, but you could potentially have a freak diode and have a 628nm laser too :eek:

Wow haha.

I could take a picture and upload it...thought it might be hard to determine the color from there.

Would 634nm be extremely rare? :san:

It does have a slight orange tint...
 
And also I may be wrong(and most likely am) but it seems LG is the only company which sells 635nm as a "pointer".

And after looking around, they consider 405nm an exotic color, which to me is quite exotic(I know 589/593.5 are more exotic) which is why it is priced so high :D

you realize 405nm 5mW diodes are incredibly cheap, right? Not really anything exotic about it, that statement is purely to attract the uninformed...

Mhm I know, I just think 405nm is exotic to me(personal opinion). But believe me, I know they can easily be had for $5 and are as common as 445nm :beer:

I think those diodes are $600 nowadays. C-mount package, which are apparently not too difficult to work with.

But still you need to run em at 5*C

Taking a picture means nothing as the camera CCDs aren't perfect nor are monitors calibrated the same. Best thing to do to check wavelength is to send it to someone with a spectrometer

...underdriving won't shift the wavelength as much as you expect. Chilling, however--

Why would you spend $239 on a 5mW 405nm? That seems like a huge waste of money to me... If it's a low power 405nm you want why not just go to ebay? I understand if you want a higher quality pointer but $239 is an awful lot to dish out for something worth about $20. JMO

I know it seems quite alot for 5mW, but I enjoy their products and feel they are the best fit for me and my growing collection :beer:
