I had the exact same idea for the exact same heatsink. Great minds think alike, I guess. Mine still hasn't
come in yet due to some kind of shipping problem.

Where did you pick up the battery holder?

I got both the heatsink and battery holder from fasttech. It's a 2x18650 holder already configured in parallel.

Finally had access to a lathe. Made a new shroud from another length of PVC.

It looks like a jet engine now. :crackup:

Added a fan guard to keep my finger away from the fan blades.

made a focus adapter from a scrap piece of polycarbonate after burning my finger while focusing. ouch!

Every laser needs a label so I peeled a label off a harvested DVD burner. :na:

I also added a DC-DC converter from a cheapie flashlight that converts the 4.2V to 6.6V driving a 5V fan. Now, not only does it look like a jet engine, it sounds like one too :crackup:

Bump. First post for 2014

My uncle and I used the lasers to light fireworks. Worked well, my 1.7W lit them up so-so while also quickly reaching the duty cycle limit.

The 3.1W laser worked almost 100% duty with no overheating issues until the battery died. My uncle managed to drain the two Panny 3400s lighting up fireworks with the laser mostly on for almost 2 hours straight with a few secs rest in between. The supercharged fan worked a treat! :beer:

Should still run very fast with two cells. Just make sure the air passes to as much heatsink surface area as possible and it will be very effective.

I tested with one cell and it runs very fast even at 3.v . I also have one of those tiny 12v cells for cameras or something but I wonder how long it will run it.

Is that the fan used in the harvested projectors? I only got the bigger ones from DTR. The smaller ones weren't available at the time.

Those 12V cells would last a few seconds at best. If you open them up, they're made up of about 8 button cells in series.

I ran the little cell for about 20 seconds. But from what you say, I probably damn near ran it dead. Still reads 12v on my dmm. But I didn't think it would last more than about a minute. My pocket dmm uses them and I was just wondering. I think the way you did it is best.

use those li-ion - USB charger boards from FT or DX. they got tons of those which is a convenient 4.2V to 5V regulated converter.
