150mW blue diode - 50$

^ true ..... Nichia also produces them, in flavors from 370 to 490nm (and their last one is a 1000mW 440/455nm diode) ..... the only problem is that they ask from 1500$ to almost 4000$ for each sample :p

(and it's damn hard to talk about small quantities, with a company for which "small quantity" usually means "at least 5000 pieces" :p)

Well, there's people buying a 400mW Sonar for 2000$, why not up to 4000 for 1W blue laser? xD

Some time ago, I inquired about buying a sample 445nm diode from a manufacturer.
It was rated at 50mW. It was $600 a pop. I was thinking it would be similar to a PHR- although, at that price I would never power it over specs.

$600 really isn't that bad when you take into consideration that a 473nm at 50mW (give or take) would easily cost more than twice as much from the average retailer... and even with the CNI GB, the price for a 50mW is only a few tens of dollars more.
Add to that the advantages of diode over DPSS... Maybe soon I'll gather up the guts (and the cash) to be the first owner of a 445nm pointer. :D

^ Yes, but these ones, i guess was complete modules with PSU and modulation and TEC ..... not bare diodes ..... i still think that for these units (lab style 437nm, i mean), the prices are a lot overpumped, for the market laws (small production and big request) ..... but here, we're speaking about bare diodes .....

With the previous example, about spending 4000$ for 1W of 440/455nm, i guess that someone can do this, having the money (thing that anyway i can't do :p) ..... but is not the same thing, spending 4000$ for a complete unit, ready for work "out of the box", and doing the same for a bare 9mm diode, when after you need to find or build host, cooling system, optics, PSU, and so on ..... ;)

I personally think that i can start to save and make sacrifices, if those diodes was like 400 or 500$, but surely not for 4000$ :p :D
