150$

Should this mean that the buy, sell and trade section should be closed to new members (like people with 1 or 2 posts wanting to buy a 1 W laser)?.....paranoia running rampant...

Wouldn't hurt. Their first few posts shouldn't be used to buy a 1W laser anyway...unfortunately we see that everyday... :(

what do you think should be the minimum post/rep count to buy lasers?

It's hard to say, I'm a new member here (not even 100 posts) and I've done a fair bit buying and trading with folks, It would suck for others not to have the same ability, but no one wants a fine from the FDA.

i have the safety equitment such as goggles, and all that. I want to know what i can get for 150$
You have safety goggles but you know shit about lasers? *sure*
And you got: "and all that" too? :tsk:

yeah, i dont know shit about lasers but i want one and im willing to spend the money.

Ill do some reading.
You have to read before you buy such a laser!
This is NOT a toy!!!!
You have to handle it with care (like a loaded gun) or you will harm yourself AND people around you!
Just stop beeing a prick and read about laser safety and the correct handling of such a high-power-laser..

Online from a guy who sells lasers. Another forum. But.. i am going to be purchasing new equipment when i find a laser i want.

I am really new to this, but these things grabbed my attention FAST.

Would you like to reccomend me some equipment to buy?

Was the guy DarkArmyofOne? If it is stay away.

I'm sure the FDA is plugged in here, but they are most concerned with web sites selling lasers. Moh opened a web site selling completed lasers. Thats what got him bagged. We are hobbyists, so they are not really focused on us. Also, if he was FDA he'd try ordering 10 or 20 lasers. Not worth the time, money, paperwork, for one laser sale.

They tried to buy 10 lasers from Moh.

10 lasers shows you're doing it for a business, not for fun. Laws change with the amount of contraband. One joint will get you possession. 10 joints and its intent to distribute, ect, ect. They have to spend a lot of time, and money to make a case, so they make sure it worth pursuing. They wouldnt waste their time with one, or two lasers.

Well, he blew right past my post with the conditional offer to sell to him. So, my guess is that he's either a dumb kid who can't be bothered with things like safety and will eventually find someone who'll sell him a laser without question, or he's an FDA agent who isn't interested in buying it in kit form, to remain in complaince with federal law.

I think the moral of the story here is that regardless of who the OP is, it is irresponsible for anyone to sell such a powerful device to someone is who so obviously ignorant of what it is capable of.

Maybe instead of having a certain post count or rep requirement, LPF or whoever is in charge could place a small timed test that shows you know what your talking about, because in addition to guys like this (assuming he's not the FDA) there are also many people like me who know a fair amount about lasers just from reading this site for months and learning from friends, with low post counts and rep just because we don't have a huge amount to say or didn't immediately become members. :T

Not a bad idea...

I agree with this. Having a required post count would be nothing but trouble. I think we'd see the number of "haha yeah" type posts and other spam skyrocket. Don't get me wrong; I'm not against this type of post, I just don't like it when it's used as artificial post-number inflation rather than as a contribution to a discussion. Basing it on reputation would be a step in the right direction, but could be a bit harsh. Part of getting repped is what you say, but equally important is where you say it. You can't just go into random threads and say something rep-worthy every time. Plus, there's a bit of bias, in my experience, when giving reputation points. Those with a strong reputation can say something short and simple to increase theirs. People with a neutral reputation have it about fair- say something good, and you'll be rewarded likewise. The people who really get the butt end of this deal are the people who have a bad start. These people deserve the negative reputation they get, but not all of them deserve the vicious cycle that follows. When there's a red bar beneath a name, it's easy to miss that they're saying helpful things, and doing their best to improve. Much easier is to seek out the reason they got it and agree with what others have said in the past. Overall, I think the only reasonable way to do things is do deal with individual cases. Having some sort of short test easily available would make things a lot easier, though. I would be against multiple choice, though, and in favor of a short-answer. Not short-answer is the "make it as long as you can" sense you see in schools, but just make them write it out. Even in the situation that the taker isn't really taking things seriously, I think that the act of writing or typing something out has a positive effect. It's kind of like stating your own opinion as opposed to begrudgingly agreeing with someone.

Tests are all fine and well, but you guys seem to be forgetting that someone would have to write the test, review the answers, decide whether to allow the person access to the forum or not, then actually go into the admin panel and do so. All of this takes time and money.

The alternative would be to have an automated test, which would require a programmer to write the coding and scoring algorithm, and integrate it into the scripting and databse. Again, this cost money.
