still, it consumes a lot of energy!

It is bad for the laser to start and stop, usually if you turn it on, you need to keep it on for a couple hours.

Why that?

Because when you turn on it on it heats up which causes thermal strain on the tube, same when you turn it off and cool it down. Causes the seals to degrade faster. The cathode also gets "chunks" blown off of it every time you start it.

I run my big 3-phase argon for about 4 hours at a time... I would say if you dont have time to run it for at LEAST an hour, dont even bother turning it on

For some reason the electrical costs dont bother me. For some reason it's the thought of the hose on full blast for 4 hours that I hate! haha...
