1.5w blue rifle laser to eye. Lazerer

Alright so today I finally got my 1.5w laser with full lense kit etc. And I never knew goggles were a must using these, and there was alot of times when I accidently looked at beam and the mirror reflected the beam into my eye and I looked at the center of the beam many times. Now I am a bit afraid as I freaked out hearing you get permanent eye damage from these as I did not think they were that powerful enough to harm my eye sight. But the odd thing is that I see normal in both eyes and I see no after burn marks or blind spots what so ever even after the beam hitting my retina for a good 2 seconds. This laser also has a power certificate at 1.6w on a test. My question is have I done permanent eye damage even though everything seems fine even looking in bright areas? I am a bit scared help. :yabbem:

Unfortunately, the answer is probably an unequivocal "yes."

Get off the computer and go see a retinal specialist.

1. Don't panic. What's done is done. That you have not noticed any damage is good.

2. Tell your parents, and ask them call the local hospitals to check if they have any retina specialists to see you on an emergency basis. Depending on your location maybe there is a nearby hospital that has an ophthalmologist on call, or already there. Get there.

3. If not, you need to get to an eye doctor, an ophthalmologist, as soon as possible so that your eyes can be evaluated. You may have gotten lucky and nothing needs to be done, or you may need immediate care to make sure more damage is not caused by inflammation within your eye.

SEE AN EYE DOCTOR ASAP!!! even though you cant see the damage you may still have permanent retinal burns,

it pays to do some research on safety so you know the inherent dangers with any laser over 5mw

You have most certainly caused permanent damage to your eyes. You may not yet have any distortion in vision, but you may. You are also more likely to suffer macular degeneration when you're older. Did your laser not come with any warnings to use your goggles, or did you just completely ignore them?

Use your goggles anytime you use this laser indoors. Period.

I'm sure someone will come along and source you to some good citations.
You should also search the forum for related threads.

Please do not waste your time searching the forum now.

Just get to an ophthalmologist as soon as you can. This is an emergency, and the longer you wait, potentially the more damage your eyes could suffer.

Please have your parents drive you if they are around, if they are asleep, wake them up.

Tell them to get you to an ophthalmologist, a retina specialist.

Yes, as IE is saying, a retinal specialist is key here. The ER might not really be able to help you with that specifically; though they might be able to get you a referral to one (if your insurance requires it).

I... wow. I have a rifle 1.5W, a hit to the eye would be devastating, I'm amazed you weren't immediately blinded. hope you can read this when you return.

I know the site has safety glasses as an option along with the lens kit, so if you didn't have some it's because you didn't opt for them. that said, the glasses that come with that laser suck (though would have been better than nothing) go with the eagle pair instead.

here's hoping you can maximize the learning/permanent injury ratio.

Also, in your OP, you said that the laser hit your "retina for a good 2 seconds'. That's seriously a long time and doesn't make any sense to me. :tsk:

If you are lucky enough to have only slight damage that doesn't affect your vision yet keep in mind the effect is cumulative, meaning that a little additional damage will give you a real problem, so be careful.

Yeah... this doesn't exactly smell right to me either. Though I suppose it's better to take the occasional troll seriously than to inadvertently dismiss someone who might actually be injured.

Owing to the "2 second" exposure... I really hope this is a troll. That exposure would be catastrophic to retinas.

To the OP: I would like to emphasize the fact that going to the ER won't help you too much. An ophthalmologist will be your best shot.

Possibly, (HOPEFULLY!) the OP was using nearly dead batteries at the time, as he never mentioned that they were fully charged, or that he had been using the laser for any burning, etc. Perhaps he opened his new laser, installed the batteries, and proceeded to use it, without ever throwing a good charge into them. SOOOOOO......maybe he got extremely lucky, and was exposed only to a VERY weak beam.

Kingraptor724: I sincerely hope that you managed to get yourself some emergency medical care, and that your eyes are okay.

And PLEASE, take the advice of the members here, and procure some QUALITY eye protection. There are many threads here discussing and evaluating different brands. And remember: poor quality safety gear is as bad or worse than no safety gear, because it gives you a false sense of security, while putting you at risk. Take the time to learn what works.

Fun fact!

I once heard in a safety briefing that with a class IV laser hit that lasts more than just a moment, the injured person will often hear an audible popping sound, as blood capillaries in his or her eye explode.

...actually that fact wasn't very fun at all.
