ya you would not be using an optical sensor at these powers without some pretty serious ND filter in front of it

I just did a test. I went across the room about 8' and metered the laser. I am not getting any different results. About 1780mw.

Hmm. Well doesn't power dissipate over such a large distance? I mean, unless you're in a vacuum you have a bunch of the light hitting particulates in the air (hence the beam). You'd probably have to redirect the fan to point to the right or left and then measure the output at the usual ~4 inches. I'll try this today.

Update:: it did make a pretty big difference for me. I re-routed the air from the fan just using a piece of folded paper as a "tunnel" and my next test peaked at 1576mW.. more than 100mW higher than the previous max I had gotten.

So, did you ever open it up and take pics? I'm really interested in what's inside :) Wouldn't that be nice to use on a scanner? :evil:

That is good it has analog modulation I would just use a fully charged lipo cell for that, a computer power supply seems so big hehehe
you need to get a battery supply of 6 volts and put a pot on it so you can turn your laser up and down. If you need a schematic I will send you one it's realy simple.
so it dose run off 120 vac for main power then.

Flaminpyro: Could you please send me the schematic so I can test my unit before I install it in my projector. I want to vary the input to make sure it is a true analog laser.

FYI - I just ordered one of these >1W 532nm lasers for $818 with shipping. I have been talking with customer support (they are awesome) and the one they are sending me should peak at 1.6 Watts! Really looking forward to getting this bad boy installed in my RRGB projector!!!
 
Lol at the beam pics with the light on. That beam is so solid it's as if you added a green line in photoshop :p

ITs been done before. The box has two PCB's in it - one is simply an smps, and the other board a driver. The driver requires 12v and 5v.

Once disassembled, the driver alone is WAY smaller than the box, making these lasers to be great for projectors that already have +12 and +5v inside. The TO-220 devices (N channel fets) need some form of heatsinking to stop them dying. :)

Yeah, ive reduced mine to a single board (nevermind the block of aluminum underneath.. im kinda heatsinking those fets via that plate bolted to my bigger projector plate.. its pleanty really).
but the board sits stacked above that plate, so it does reduce the footprint.

Needs 5V/12V with a common ground, so really a 12V source with a linear regulators will do.
The original PSU itself does have a beefy 12V/5V SMPS though, so that is definatly usefull for other stuff.

Mines been outing a steady 1.6W CW and jumps up 100mw or so upon connecting modulation.

Only change now is that this is a full 1.6W green projector, with a 8" X 12" total footprint.

very cool, good to know the driver itself is not that huge...

I just purchased one of these EXCELLENT lasers myself. For $818 with shipping it's not a bad deal for a consistent 1600mW. Let me know if you need me to take apart my power supply and scan images of the parts...
 
Yes, it is listed on the website a 1 watt but everyone I have seen with these report they are over 1.5 watts. I contacted "Fang" at customer support before I purchased (to make sure it was a true ANALOG which it is) and he measured the power at 1600mW with 5 voltS input. I own a LaserBee 2.5 watt USB light power meter and I can attest that this laser puts out consistently around 1600mW - it is amazingly bright!

So happy with my new purchase!!!
