Wow that was just so painful to watch. I could not finish it. Even if that is a low watt laser, repeated eye strikes just can't be good for you. If that was any indication of his usual behavior... :banghead:

Some people simply don´t understand lasers above 5mW are no toys. Once I was building a red one with a LPC 815 that was just outputing 150mW at this stage, my sister came in. I already took the protection glasses off as I wanted to to put the laser away. She saw the laser in my hand and took it out of my hand like crazy saying "ohh a laser" in that moment the laser turned on and shined for a fraction of a secound into my right eye. Now I have two little blind spots since then. This was months ago.

At the beginning they were really annoing my vision but are almost not noticable right now. I learned my lesson and am always closing the door with a key now when am building another one.

You might be carefull as hell, but others simply don´t think about what they can do to themselfs or others. With lasers it´s like with driving cars. You have to think for you and the others. So far I´m thinking powerful lasers shouldn´t be forbidden at all, but only allowed to grown ups who first are cleared up about the risks and knowing this is no christmas gift for their child.

I get a kick out of watching 10 year old kids order like 6 knives, 14 lighters and 10 lasers from DX or whatever and then proceed to cut, burn and blind themselves.. Sometimes you have to take the amusement value out of these kinds of things... Seriously the kids should know better and their parents should be supervising them. As a good friend of mine says "You can't fix stupid"

That's just it, they don't know better. Hell, I didn't even know how dangerous they are until I began doing research here.
If you click on the kids youtube user-name you can leave a message in his inbox like I just did. Not that it will do any good :undecided:

It was ore the knives and lighters I was talking about than the lasers to be honest... I'm sure everyone has heard not to shine a laser in your eyes though and I mean if it starts things on fire you would figure they would have enough common sense not to point it at themselves.

Yet they don't
And every kid plays with knives & lighters. That's different. There's an obvious danger there. Not so with lasers.

I disagree. I think it takes varying degrees of idiocy to hurt yourself with each of the above items. Probably in order of highest to lowest degree of idiocy:
Stick
Stone
Lighter
Knife
Gun
Laser

With guns and lasers you can hurt yourself just by not knowing. It's not common sense.

True, but you will admit it´s way easier to shoot someone with a bullet comming out of a gun rather than shooting with cotton wool balls to him. They are maybe harmless as long they are not touched or moved, but nevertheless way more dangerous than cotton wool balls. Not just in a hand of an idiot. A loaded gun even can kill you by falling off your desk caused by a light earthquake. A cotton ball wont.

I disagree. If guns were harmless, you could point them at anything and everyone. Doing that is completely stupid. Guns will always be dangerous, regardless of who handles them. A proffesionally trained person follow strict safety rules will know how to handle that danger and have a far lower risk of accidents, down to a level that's acceptable. That doesn't make guns less dangerous. Idiots won't handle them properly, and they will cause accidents, and usually serious accident.

If guns and lasers were safe you could point them at anyone and everything. That's not the case. If a proffesional hold a gun it doesn't change that gun, so it's still as dangerous as ever. But I'd rather see guns handled by proffesional, considering the lower chance of accident.

That youtube kid witht he 50mW pointer actually hit his eyes, he barely missed het left eye but he fully hit his right eye. If there is IR present (good chance considering the cheap pointer) his left eye may also be hit.

Look how many people are killed by either "unloaded" or blank loaded guns every year.. Look how many kids play with guns every year... I think the guns aren't toys and don't shine a laser in peoples faces message is sent to pretty much everyone but that doesn't stop them from being dumb.
