You could easily have different drop in modules for my SolarForce kit...

Even a green! :) (but you would also 'flip' the battery to case positive)

Hey do you happen to know for sure what the reference voltage is on that LD1085?

I'm trying to figure out what resistors to use in parallel to get 1.8 Amps of output...

If it is the same as an LM317 (1.25 volts) I think a 1.5 ohm in parallel with a 1.3 ohm resistor would be very close to 1800mA's.

Or a 1 ohm, with a 2.2 ohm...

so are you going to offer these jay?
IF the host itself comes down to around $50 i'd be intereested, but at $100 no thanks haha , a lttle pricey for my taste

Yes I can build it with the host 'in hand'...

It would obviously be a custom order. Not many will want to spend the money on the host...

Yes I agree!

The host is unique. I really like the thick stainless steel bezel on the RL-2088 'Frankenstein'.

Even DTR said he would like to build another one...

Oh yes, it is a good flashlight! But not as good as my XM-L T6 Maglite mod! :D

About the same brightness, but with much better throw, and the battery supply for my Maglite mod has much more capaticy...

P.S. I saw this price on it with an SST50 emitter... $84 bucks! :)

About the potentiometer:
It's great when you are making them en masse and selling your drivers to a lot of people.
But if you are DIYing them on a individual basis, you'd be better off just using
fixed resistor instead, less cost/hassle/space/complexity IMHO.

Apart from that, good job on the module, jayrob, nice seeing all those educational pictures
of you doing some quality building!
"Plug and play" modules are always cool.
I remember seeing someone somewhere making Flashlight "P60" style laser drop-ins!:eek:

Something about the idea of having one "gun" and a quiver of different color beams appeals to my inner geek.

DTR just told me that he tried an LD1085 and the reference voltage is 1.25 volts just like an LM317. (according to the current he got with the resistors he used)

So I edited this drawing with the information for 1.6 Amps, or 1.8 Amps:

P.S. Only experimentation will tell us exactly what the drop out voltage for the completed circuit will end up being.

I have a feeling that 3 X Li-Ions may still be needed for a 445 at max current...

I mean, two will work at full charge, but the circuit may start dropping in output before the batteries need charging.

Because the other components also have some voltage draw from the supply. Not just the 1085...

I think the silicon diode has a 1 volt drop out.

I hope I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt that we can match drlava's FlexModP3. (Only needing 1.5 volts above diode demand)

Only downside I can find is it starts dropping current @ 8V so it will need to be in a 3XLi-Ion host like the RL-2088.;)

That's what I figured would happen.

It's still a great option to build for a 3 X Li-Ion set up. But if you want that kind of power using only 2 X Li-Ion's, like with a Maglite build, then you will have to go for the FlexModP3...

Another thing worth mentioning, is that the heatsink on the FlexModP3, is some kind of non-conductive material. So that makes it easy to just heatsink it to the main sink...

But with a 1085, it will most likely have a metalic heatsink, that must be isolated from the negative...
