In your opinion, what does 635nm look like?

Just wondering, I searched the topic on here and googled it, but couldn't find it anywhere... I know that on the visible wavelength scale it falls right between red 650nm and orange 594nm... So what do you think 635nm looks more like? Orange or red? Just wondering.

Closest I can come is my hene, so I aimed it at a white door, along with a 35mW red pointer for comparison. The hene does look more orange than the red pointer. I'd call it orange-red ... This is one of these matters that will be perceived differently by different observers. (You might think its' reddish-orange ...)
 
Gracias. I figured it'd be one of those "you'd have to see it with your own eyes to understand it" things.
 
635nm is red. It is an orangish red, but it is red.

594nm is much closer to yellow/amber/gold than orange

For orange you need to get to around 612nm

WOW!! Where do you buy the 612nm??? That's beautiful.

-and just wondering, but how far out could you pop a balloon with that 541nm? It looks like amazing divergence!
 
This is pretty accurate as to how my eyes see the 635 and 660. To me the differance is hardly noticable unless you place them side by side, then I see 635 as slightly more orange than 660. The difference is minimal though.

612nm HeNe's are rare. So far I have bought every used one of them I have found for sale. It is in that picture :whistle:

Gas lasers, in general, have much better beam spec's than diode laser. The lasers in the picture have NO focusing optics in them. The only optics in them are wavelength filters (to control the color).

That being said, the average output of these Helium/Neon lasers in the picture is ~3mW. Not much balloon popping going on with these. ;)

Ahh, I see, when compared there the 660nm looks really more pink, closer to IR I guess, and wow, great collection there, it actually looks like those are way more powerful.

-also, if you don't mind, how much did that particular 612nm HeNe run you?

Ahhhh! The magic of "Smoke in a Can".

In order to get the 612nm HeNe, I had to purchase a whole collection of crap along with it.

Personally, I've always thought that it looked very, very orangish red. If you get it in the right conditions, it's noticable enough that other people occasionally call it orange. 98% of the time though, it just looks red though. It depends on your eyes though, it's soooo close to the border of orange and red that there is some variation in how orange it will look from one person to the next.

EDIT- it is red, it just looks more orange to some than others.
 
To any person who doesn't know better, 635nm is red. To someone like us, 635nm is noticeably orange when you look at it but still mainly red. 2007's picture shows this difference perfectly on my monitor IMO.

Like everybody else has said, the difference is way more noticeable when you have a 650nm/660nm to compare it with.
