Hello, hmm well I had an ebay discount of 10 Euro. 19 bucks is a little pricy, but I was surprised how flawless it works. Basically you could build it yourself using a fake arduino micro board and a little know how, that I don‘t possess 😉

The small golden thing on the blue box is the screw to adjust the max. current. I would test it using a dummy first, since turning these screws while hooked to the diode can caus sudden and dramtic increases of the current, that could potentially kill or harm the diode. Anyway there is no screw to adjust the voltage, which is set a little too high for this diode.. We‘ll see how tough it is 😉

I purchased a PWM awhile back for ~$5.00 that has three output terminals. I bought it to use on the TTL input of some RGB lasers. It has a frequency range from 10 Hz to 150 KHz. All that needs to be done is to limit the input voltage to the PWM to 6 volts so you don't have too much voltage at the output terminals.

great finds-- 638/640 nm is brighter red than 650--
going with a cubed dual is pretty bright. we never have too much red--funny we used ti say the exact thing when talking about blue--which now is the cheapest...
here is proof by norty303 at PLEX
I tried to post the pics but my PW is not working MYB you can post some of them--it pretty convincing --

400mW 640nm vs 1.1 watt 650nm - Pics and videos! ;)

Ok, so I know a couple of you have been waiting to see how these heads compare, so in the interest of fulfilling demand for pics AND vids, here are some pics and vids...
redface.png

The camera captures the colours poorly, its much more purple than in real life, in fact I was hard pressed to spot the difference in wavelength. However, it does do justice to the brightness perception, again I was hard pressed to tell.

See what you think....

I did take some shots and vids with the greens on as well, however it looks as if my older 532 is somewhat down on power compared to the new one, which I need to investigate. It only has about 30hrs on it and was doing just over 400mW when I got it. The difference in brightness is as noticeable in real life as in the vid, and if you've been paying attention it gives away which is the 650nm out of the 2. So, I've posted those pics/vids over on my RGY build thread so as not to spoil it if you want to have a guess here.

it is differences like this that make answering 'which is 'brighter' questions-- not easy-- plus each persons eyes differ too

wow
5$ is a great deal IMO--wonder if anyone else can get some that cheap...got any links to share??
Paul--

How are those pwm drivers for testing? Spikes? Safe? Like the idea.

The ones I have seen are clean. I suppose it depends on what you intend to do with it. They are fine for TTL or driving certain motors.

Hello,
I just wanted to add that I did a little mistake measuring the output power. I put the LPM to close to the laser and the fan which cooled off the sensor, thus the real output power with lens attached is 165-170 mW.

Have a nice time and safe lasing!

Hello kecked,
if you want to test the durability of your LD, I‘d go for analog modulation, since PWM only changes the duration of laser pulse and no laser pulse. Only to our eyes the power output seems to change when operated at high pulsing frequencies (> 1 kHz). The actual output power stays constant. You can also test your LD max. performance by changing the current.

Hope I could help

Good point. When binning diodes. Modulated or Cw? Bet the answers different in terms of measured wave;ength

Hey folks,
if you‘re still looking for a pwm controller, Techhood has an awesome deal of a 6W 450nm laser module for 78$ shipped including a pwm controller. I ordered it yesterday and might review the bundle in a different thread upon arrival.
Diode is probably the NUBM08.. We‘ll see

See you later

That PWM is useless if you plan on using this for engraving. You need something that can change very fast to keep up with the X-Y adjustment of the laser during the engraving function. This PWM will change from a high to low in many seconds which is incredibly slower than what you will need.

Absolutely right, but I don‘t use it as an „engraving tool“, so this pwm works for me. Techhood has never let me down so far. Let‘s see if that cheap deal works out. Out of all chinese ebay sellers they ship for free and the stuff is in central Europe just a week later. Idk how that‘s possible..

Government subsidized mail which flows quickly, that gives the Chinese sellers an edge, if we had to wait weeks, few would order from them, but due to the subsidy, we are also screwed when something we buy from them costs more to send back, than it cost to buy it, but I'm no longer entirely sure about that as I believe (at least used to be so) ebay requires the seller to pay postage back, when returning a defective or not as described item.

Ah okay so the mistery of free shipping from China is solved now. Yeah I would never spend more than 100$ for some ebay lasing equipment, but my experience with chinese vendors is 100% positive. In fact I‘ve had more trouble with german or european trades in the past than with asian ones. If I pay via paypal, I am also protected to a certain degree. I will do a review on a 6W 445nm laser module that I ordered from Techhood for 60$ when it arrives.

You can have good experiences with Chinese, as well as bad. The main problem with them is how they make claims which are completely false regarding specifications, if they list a 200 mw laser, you will probably get 70 mw, if 1 watt, maybe 300 mw... it all depends on which seller, some are worse than others. Laserlands screwed me badly once on a beam expander, showed a picture of a high quality one, send me a piece of junk which loosely resembled the one in their listing and did not have the specifications. No way to get 20X expansion with an output lens only 20 mm wide with a 2 mm wide input aperture, so it was really 10X and worse than that, no AR coating, they inferred it was for a specific wavelength, nope! Just clear glass, and it would not focus to infinity. I even emailed them making sure their advertised specifications were correct before I paid, they either lied, or were clueless.
