With a ball lens incorporated in the diode's case, the divergence could be anywhere from reasonable to awful. The specification sheet shows these to max out at 460nm. Not very high. Good luck with your tests.

I just grabbed a block of these. Hopefully I can do some testing on them this weekend.

Can you measure the spot at 15 feet and snap a pic of the code on the block, they should all be the same in that block, I would like to be able to identify via the code which blocks have the GBalls focused the tightest.

I did some testing tonight and took some pics/video. The power test video was corrupted on my SD card so I'll have to do another. Here are some pics - click on them for high-res:

I have one of the eBay USB Spectrometers but I can't seem to get it configured properly. I'll try messing with it some more soon and see if I can get some wavelength results.

Wow! That's some diodes.

Are you planning to pull some and put them up for sale? If you are, I might be interested in a few?

Edit, I see (I think) you have blocks of nubm42's, 44's, 47's a block of 07's and a block of 02's is that correct?

Thanks for the pics.

I found them interesting.

These are all empty blocks from diodes that I've already sold. You can see the items I have for sale from the links in my signature. I can do discounts for LPF members. I still have a couple NUGM02 and NUBM07 diodes left. I've used them in some pointer builds I've made. I have lots of 44/47's.

Yes, all the info should be in the BOX code, including I suspect the GBall lens RX for NUBM diodes with GBall lenses, as efficiency is improved and output is increased getting diodes with the best focused GBall could allow use with the factory can/GBall intact which I find desirable for perceived longevity.

I was interested in the spot size out of the factory GBall lens, the one you pictured will do best in a module with our conventional lenses, G2,3E,G7,G9 and then as much correction and manipulation as desired via beam shaping and use of a beam expander if so desired, much depends on the purpose.

Some ( not all ) of the 06 diodes I have found produce a print in the 1.5-2.0 inch by 1/4-3/4 inch range @ 15 feet and can be used with the factory GBall lens intact by adding a 3X beam expander, granted you can pull the can/GBall and use a 3 element lens followed by a 3X beam expander for just as good of a result, the trade off being the GBall is a slightly longer FL and very efficient and protects the emitter well, but not all GBall lenses are the same, each block can be ordered by the OEM with a beam profile best suited to their needs, while the emitter of one 06 or 42 diode is the same as the next the GBall is tuned to the customers needs and I had hoped to identify the ones with the best factory infinity focus but I would need to examine many blocks to determine that and the corresponding code along with the diode prints.

Thanks for the pics, I see drippings from the melted indium that answered a question and I see the GBall's spot size which indicates pulling the cans would be best for these as is the case with most NUBM diodes, the 44 being the exception.

I am hoping to see more efficient and stronger diodes in the future, please keep us appraised of anything new you may find, Thanks.

Ok, sure saw a whole bunch of blocks, thought they were still full. I will check your link and see if there's something I'd like. :thanks:

How hot did it get by the end of that test? 5 amps for 5.4-5.5 watts seems a little less efficient than a few of the other high power diodes. I'm just wondering if heat may have been a factor. Thanks for sharing the test. And is it just me or did it look like the color was shifting quite a bit towards the end of the test?

It didn't even feel warm but there is a high speed fan aimed right on the heatsink. I need to get a temp gun. It definitely looked like the color was shifting. I have a spectrometer but can't figure out how to get it to give accurate readings. It's on my "to do" list to figure it out. I also just ordered another type of spectrometer and maybe that will be easier.
