Hello all,
Thought that I'd finally do a quick introduction.
My name is Chris, and I live in Northern AZ.
Automotive has always been my passion, but electronics, and different science aspects have been right there too. My dad was an electrical engineer, and taught me basic electronics knowledge growing up. Including how to build and set-up computers, and how to read schematics (but that was awhile ago). As soon as I learned about lasers, it interested me. But now as the technology has advanced outside of industrial use, to allow it to be a feasible hobby (both laser output/cost), I thought I'd begin with yet another exciting pastime. I have done a bit of research so far, but I'm far from an expert with this. But safety was a first priority (already own 2 pairs of glasses), and being an owner and user of firearms, the general safety aspect of lasers seams to have a lot in common with gun safety.
I also have access to a lathe, mill, and other basic tools at my job, so now I'm always on the look out for scrap aluminum, and unused/broken flash lights to try and transform into usable hosts, and other parts.
I already have 1 custom host, and am waiting on the second (thanks Ehgemus!). And I look forward to learning a lot from the other members here! :D

Welcome Chrisbee, I work very part time in a screw machine shop and you would think I have access to the machinery and scrap metal all the time but ive never seen a cheaper owner God forgive I use any electricity on my off time to make something for myself and forget about scrap unless I can shove some of the metal "chips" in my pocket he is a hawk on every bar stock ends or pieces that arent on spec. If im working with brass or copper he is like an armed guard. If it wasnt part time I would probably kill myself. welcome again

Haha. They're not that far off from this at my work. I work nights, so all the Chiefs are gone, except for the one shift lead. So if he catches me messing with any of the machines, I just say that I'm honing my machining skills. And he's good with it as long as I'm just using scrap.

Thanks! I live in Williams AZ. Been here for the last 7 yrs. But lived down in the Phoenix area my entire life before that. The cool thing where I'm at now is, I'm in the forest, but I can drive for an hour and be back into the dessert, or even at the Grand Canyon. And there's several secluded places to play with telescopes, lasers, guns, etc.

Way to go Chrisbee, but I swear my owner has some type of metal detector gizmo hidden in the front door:thinking:

It would be pretty sweet!
I know the north rim is closed for the season, but the south rim is still open.
Problem with trying to get at beam shot there is it's always busy. Tourists lining the Canyon. I'd probably get way more attention then I'd like shooting a laser across the Grand Canyon with a hundred people staring at me.
