Review of "Custom Ordered" 654nm LaserGlow 5mW unit

Hey all,

A slightly different review for you all today. If most are not aware, I decided to sell my 650nm laserbtb unit after hearing LG was willing to sell me their ONLY 650-660nm pointer they had left in stock. Have been anxiously looking at the tracking for the past week and the laser has finally arrived today :)

On to the pictures!!!

- The laser arrived in a standard UPS box. Nothing too special about it, basic information about from where it shipped to where the destination was.

- Inside the UPS package was the black box containing the unit, along with a white protective cover(which provides output information) and on top of it all pink bubble wrap.

- This may be hard to see on camera but the sticker on the white box labeled this as a 635nm Taurus. The output information is also not listed :)

- The box itself is much "fatter" than the other boxes I have received from them. Other than that, all is pretty much the same. Box feels solid, looks well built and has padding inside to help protect the unit.

- Inside the LG black box is the laser. As you can see the laser itself has no labeling whatsoever(not complaining :p). Along with the laser is a CR123 battery provided to power it up.

- Another shot of the pointer. Note: Label read wavelength: 635nm-671nm :D And of course, output power <5mW!

- The laser fits comfortably in my hand. To be honest, I was at first expecting something bulky and at times even awkward to handle but this isn't the case. Very pleased :beer:

This is not a review. This is an unboxing.

A review is a critical evaluation of the product. You have made no attempts AT ALL to verify any of the manufacturer's claims, and there are no quantitative measurements of any kind.
 
Cmon cypar, take it easy. This isnt a forum to hardcore nitpick everything.
 
Also how many people have a good enough LPM to ACCURATELY measure a 5mW laser? The only thing I would say this could use is some Beamshots and maybe a couple pros and cons of this laser the greenlander has found through using it.

The shipping time was around 1 week. Pretty good for "free" shipping in my opinion.

And yes, I will be posting more threads about nighttime/beam shots at a later time, so be on the look-out :p

Awesome host ! Im a bit jealous of your pen collection I have a special affinity for pens .. sadly all mine are junk for the most part. Cant wait for some night time beam shots if you can catch em. My camera won't pick up red very well and doesnt pick up 405 at all really even around 500mw

Thanks haha. Don't worry about your collection, most of them are good lasers. I still don't even have 445nm haha :(
 
Ya I have some great lasers .. just my pens arent very high quality. My 650 and 405 pens are good. My green pen is horrible lol

You and I clearly do not agree on what "hardcore nitpicking" is. A review is a critical evaluation of a product. NO evaluation has been performed here.

Divergence, power, beam size, driver type, driver characteristics, focus behavior, current draw, voltage threshold, regulation window, voltage threshold, and many more things can be tested. These all evaluate the quality of the product. Taking a single picture of it while active does nothing.

Am I the only one that's not okay with the monumentally low standards set for "reviews" around here?
 
Look I totally agree with you man. Thing is Alex is a great guy and deserves a bit more respect if you have a problem with the quAlity of his review. That is all.

Edit. I just feel that you could have handled this with more tact is all.. I do agree with you for sure about the standards of reviews but I think folks may feel you came off as rude perhaps? Maybe im wrong. Either way its still a sweet pen we can agree on that im sure :yh:

Edit again.. this is truly said with all due respect man. Your a vet here im NOT trying to tell you how LPF works you've been here much much longer then me

Nope, sorry. Fuck your tact. I keep bullshit to a minimum. There have been no insults or other ad-hominem remarks. That's the best you can hope for.

How would you have said it? "Hey there, buddy. Maybe next time you could include some measurements for us? That would be great. Thanks a million! :) :) :) :) :)" just isn't in my character, and frankly, I think it makes for a dull character anyway.

Honestly I truly am a dick and brutally honest with people too but id rather not ruin my reputation here by coming in as a newb and telling people when they're idiots ... speaking in general not referring to OP or any replies to this particular thread. I feel im walking on thin ice around d here and you actually alleviated some of that concern of mine. Thankyou.

Nope. I'm with you. This OP didn't provide any information about the laser itself, beyond what was on the label.

This is an "unboxing", or perhaps a "review of LaserGlow box that custom units ship in" :beer:

It's pretty rough to target this OP specifically though, especially when there are so many offending "reviews" on LPF that essentially lead by poor example. There must be a thread on LPF somewhere about how to write an effective review - maybe we should dig it up and have it stickied.

There is such a thread, and it is stickied.

The more the better in a review, IMO. Some of the review I've done are tagged informal or non scientific, as my means are limited without lpm, spectrometer or inside info on the laser. Cyparagon makes a great point, but it's not possible with all lasers to know the inside info ie driver, as CNI don't tell us and I'm not about to destroy a laser just to find out.

What this review and others like it need is bulking out, perhaps a short video, and a tag to mark it as informal or non scientific. IMO not owning an LPM or being unable to tear the laser apart shouldn't stop you from posting a review, merely be aware of its limitations and make those around you aware that it's not a number crunching scientific analysis.

At the end of the day, people review mobile phones without tearing them apart, so there's definitely middle ground here.
