Re: CLOSED: Taking payments ROUND 4!: THE "Skylaser" (laserBtB) groupbuy!

Got my HL520 about an hour ago. I couldn't be happier with it, especially for the price. I can't believe how visible the beam is in a dark room for 50mw, its also powerful enough to burn when focused to a small point. I really wish I had an lpm to test this thing out, I feel like its over spec but I don't know. Thanks a lot for planing this GB ORF I hope to be a part of future buys.

IT HAS ARRIVED!

First impression...Wow. just wow. Looks awesome, feels incredible, LOVE the safety features (shutter+key+plug), and the effects cap is SWEEEET! SO awesome. I feel bad for those who got defective effect caps, cause they are frickin AMAZING!

Heres a quick beamshot:

Re: CLOSED: Taking payments ROUND 4!: THE "Skylaser" (laserBtB) groupbuy!

Two things:

1) the rear plug doesn't always want to activate, the plug has to be in a certain position. Inconvenient, and I feel like it shouldn't be that way, but it doesn't really bother me.

2) the beam is not as thin as some 532 modules and pens I have had before- I LOVE this! It makes the laser seem more...How should I say...rich? beefier, fuller, whatever you want to call it. Certainly more visible this way. Like I said, I think it looks awesome.

Another kinda interesting note, the beam has a "flat" side, similar to multimode diodes. It is very barely visible, you can only see it if the beam is very visible (dark room, fog, etc.) and you are looking closely. Not a gripe, just interesting, since I have never seen/heard of solid state lasers having a beam like this.

All in all, LaserBTB gets a 9/10 from me!

My beam shot of the same laser crazyspaz has.

Notes: No fog, dark room, decent amount of dust, taken down range of the laser, as lasers are brighter coming toward you. Pointing the camera toward the host.

This thing is insanely impressive in the dark, I have learned to burn things with it, my ONLY concern now is that others are saying 50mW beam is visible in the day. This thing isn't visible in the day, even in the shade. I don't have anything to compare it to, so still intend to get it metered.

^would quote what Cody said but it would be huge :p

Anyway, I even had trouble seeing my PL-E 500mW 532nm during the day.

That's reassuring. I was pretty worried being told 50mW was visible, yet mine which is 6x brighter wasn't. Knowing that even a 500mW was difficult to see during the day, that reassures me that maybe my laser isn't insanely underspec like I've been afraid of.

My 100-180mW green is visible indoors during the day (even with windows open) but it's not visible outdoors (on the sky) unless the day is very, very dark and cloudy.

crazyspaz, if these lasers aren't focusable try pointing it at a distant wall through a magnifying glass. It might be mode-hopping or stable in a mode that isn't TEM00.

It is all circumstantial. What matters is the LPM. Stop worrying about the visual signs of its power.

Underspec HL532 -300s are VERY rare...

Re: CLOSED: Taking payments ROUND 4!: THE "Skylaser" (laserBtB) groupbuy!

It's not really the beam that's really bright indoors, it's the dot. The dot is INSANE. I can't look at the dot indoors for more than a few seconds before it starts to be too much.

Just warning you, as it was something I wasn't expecting.

I advised you personally on this very thing once or possibly twice on some threads you'd posted or replied in (in fact it may even have been this thread) - you would do good to read into such posts a little more.

Also. Have a look at my review (see sig) of the 100mW version of your laser. As far as I know the only difference is the power rating. I found that it only achieves minimum focus around 10 or so inches from the front of the laser, yours should be similar. Beam should be easy to see in a room even lit by the lights, but you WON'T see it outside in the daytime unless it's overcast and you hold the laser next to your cheek... so don't be misled thinking you'll see it outside during the day. you won't easily.

The flat sided beam may be due to it clipping the aperture opening. I'd check under safely controlled, dusty conditions, as it'll be reducing your total output power.

I don't automatically subscribe to threads I post in, therefore any thread I didn't create myself I'm unlikely to visit again in search of responses.

However, for the threads I'd posted myself, could you provide a link to those threads and your response? I must've missed it.

Edit: Nope, wasn't this thread. Your only other post in it was relating to something that had nothing to do with me. About if anyone else's laser had a specific problem.

Edit2: Relating to your problem, no matter how lightly I press my power button the output power seems to be the same. Could be a defect of yours specifically.

Here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f53/need-good-glasses-87064.html#post1266510

How far down does your laser focus? I physically can't get my 532 to focus any closer than just shy of one foot, so trying to burn stuff just in front of the aperture won't work!

Yup, sure enough, I hadn't seen that post at all. Figured I had probably missed it.

In response to your post in that thread, I've wondered what kind of things the eagle pairs can go through. I haven't really seen any destructive tests on them (due to their price, no doubt). But that warning on the brightness of the dot would've helped had I read it sooner. Spent the day pretty light headed. :/

I'll grab my ruler real quick and test how far my "focal point" is from the end of my laser, then edit this post. BRB!

Edit: The beam of my laser is VERY thin, between the 7 inch and 7 1/2 inch marks on my ruler.

yep, sounds about right. at that point I can melt tape in a few seconds and red headed matches light instantly. no need to pen them - but i've never tried a white match (never seen one???).

I wish I had more blue matches. I found a pack of 20 of them on the ground the other day, and they ignite instantly. Even if I just move them through the beam. It's crazy! I'm saving 10 of them, for any future videos I do.

I've got about 10,000 white matches. They're pretty tough to light compared to other colors. I literally JUST lit a bunch and timed them. They averaged lighting in 3 - 5 seconds, with the 300mW. To those with low output lasers, I'd consider it an achievement to light a white head match.

Re: CLOSED: Taking payments ROUND 4!: THE "Skylaser" (laserBtB) groupbuy!

if dark matches light instantly then I can't see you having a problem with the laser. Lighter coloured matches will struggle because the light just bounces off. Think about it - a laser's energy is in its light and if that light is just bouncing the energy is going nowhere. I set on fire a train ticket by aiming my 445 at the black part, yet try as I might it will barely smoke a flimsy white tissue.

I hear 405's are somewhat an exception to these rules as the shorter wavelength means it can still cook bright objects. Then of course CO2 lasers with their ultra high (long?) wavelength can also cut glass... our lasers in the visible wavelengths if you think about it really only have very limited capabilities.

Yeah, my original problem with thinking the laser was underspec is it not being able to light matches, and people saying theirs were brighter than what I was explaining. But as far as the matches went it turned out I wasn't using the focal point, and as far as the brightness it was just situational. Now I'm pretty sure my laser is on or over spec, however I'm still going to have it metered along with this batch of Ebay Pens I'm getting here in the next day or two.
