Re: Feeler: Osram PL TB450B 1.6W (Not M140)

Are you sure it is the 1.4W version?
Perhaps the 1.6W is the same diode just selected for higher output?
Or maybe Osram uses the same recipe so the artifact on the fast axis is the same.

Awaiting wl test...
Thanks!

My C6 (not sure if A140 or M140 diode) also has that "3 lines" output if underdriven with only one battery (150-200mW).

Re: Feeler: Osram PL TB450B 1.6W (Not M140)

Okay, I've done some wavelength testing. The wavelength at 300mA is 440nm. I can only
test at low power for several reasons.

  1. I don't want to burn my ruler/wall/grating.
  2. I don't have a neutral density filter.
  3. The only lens I have is B coated and reflects quite a bit of blue. COD is quite undesirable.
  4. I don't have any OC/partial mirrors to provide a limit that way.

My confidence in this measurement is quite high due to some other very accurate
measurements with a 532nm DPSS laser. It isn't off by any more than 5nm at the
absolute worst. It would be even better if I had a multiline HeNe, but no such joy.
Either this one just happens to have a low wavelength or I did overheat it when I put the
heatshrink on.

I was experimenting with several different "filters" due to the lack of anything real. The best
hope was a shade 10 filter designed for welding masks. That turned out to block all of the
blue light. It is most likely an absorptive type and not reflective like safety glasses. I kept
turning up the power because no light was going through and it started melting. It wasn't
even an inch in front of the lens, nowhere near the focal point. Only a faint yellow light
actually goes through. It is quite similar to the safety glasses in that regard. Luckily it
was just an old scratched up junk filter that is pitted by welding slag.

I think I'm going to try making a hole in something round and putting it on a motor shaft
since I have plenty of CD/DVD/BluRay spindle motors just lying around. Does anyone
have a better idea? It's either that or stacking a bunch of lenses out of old sunglasses.

If there are no further objections, I'm going to go ahead and declare this GB officially open.

I'll take one...
Will you be sending them out once all the orders are in or are you willing to send out one of your samples for someone who is a little impatient?

The 4 samples will go out immediately upon receipt of payment. Earlier posts have seniority. There are 2
ahead of you right now. It all depends on exactly how many KRNAZNBOY wants. If he wants less than 3
then you definitely have one. I just sent him a PM to find out.

Any ideas on max power?

Ok, cool.
Send me a PM when you know. I'll have the $ ready.

Re: Feeler: Osram PL TB450B 1.6W (Not M140)

I really wanted to do an LPM test tonight, but I can't figure out how to get around the lens/sensor
problems. I'm going to order a lens right now, but that is probably like a week out at best. About all I
can say right now is that it is at least equivalent to some IR C-mount diodes I've been running at 2.3A.
No LPM data on those yet either

I'm not sure how running the head without the front half would affect the results, but I could give it a
shot. Drafts and ambient aren't going to affect the results much at these power levels anyway. The
only thing that might throw the result off is the loss of the extra thermal mass of the front half. It's not
happening tonight anyway. It's getting late.

This worked out perfect because I just messed up an m140 I was screwing around with (should of just left it alone).... but this means I now have a 1.8A X-drive I am going to use on it ;)

Is your X-drive adjustable? The abs. max. on the datasheet is 1.6A. I counted only 3 bond wires (from
each pin). This is just a guess, but the bond wires on these will likely fail just before COD occurs.

X-Drive is not adjustable. I know the data sheet says 1.6A but it also says that for the 1.4W version so I am just gonna take a gamble that it can handle it ;)

I figure someone has to try it

Re: Open: Osram PL TB450B 1.6W (Not M140)

A 3-element glass lens coated for 445nm is on order to do the LPM testing, etc.

Can we contribute to a murder fund? (or is that already going on and I somehow missed it)
