Using a laserbee on a smartphone?

Hi, I have a LaserBee 2.5Watt USB Laser Power Meter and a Samsung Galaxy S3, there is an adapter I can get so I can plug things that use usb into my micro usb port such as keyboards etc, do you think I could use an LPM ? The only problem is I would not be able to install the actual software because it is windows only

Does your smartphone have drivers for the USB to serial converter? I highly doubt this is possible.

WL explored this idea a while back.

I think they dumped it for three reasons, cost, lack of demand, and people would see their lasers are underspec.

There is no reason why it wouldn't be possible, just highly improbable.

Is there an app for that? Would be pretty cool. I dont see why a linux application could not be wrote to run on android...

1. Develop hardware to output a signal voltage proportional to the sampled laser power to an audio cable.
2. Write app to read that signal voltage.
3. Plug LPM into microphone jack on phone.
4. Call a friend and make them listen to your laser. (optional)
5. ???
6. PROFIT!

Many Android smartphones these days can act as a USB host, meaning you can plug mice, keyboards, USB flash drives etc into them. Being linux based, if you knew the Android OS well enough, it is completely doable.

Well... LETS GET IT DONE An app that you could just plug any thermopile ophir,laserbee etc into the audio jack would be amazing All you would need is a few different adapters for the different plugs they use, also it would be cheaper sense you don't need the LPM itself but just the termopile

You'd need a circuit to map the output voltage of your sensor to a voltage that the phone would be able to read from the microphone jack.

Not quite an adapter, but close.

Actually there is an iOS bluetooth DMM out there. The same idea could work for android, if it doesn't already exist.

Does DATA logging ...etc Android version is more of a DIY solution.

I really do think Bluetooth is the best option we got for a project like this. RS232 to Bluetooth.

I was just about to say, has no one heard of Bluetooth?

Surely you could couple the output of the Laserbee to a bluetooth TX module? then with the appropriate software read it on Android?

IOS is useless as its bluetooth is A2DP only.
