Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

Thank you Sopark.

People, see the update on the opening post - Prototype is nearly finished and I am taking pre-orders.

No payment needed up-front, you can pay when the host is fully finished.

Mind you, it may take 2 weeks or longer for the ordered tap/die set to arrive, holiday season and all.

Let me know what you think!

By the way...
31st of December 2011 - Happy New Year's Eve everybody, I hope you're all having GREAT time, and you have had a year worthy of celebrating!

So question - regarding battery contact board at the top... how does one make sure that the connection between the board and the host is solid? Is it a pressfit, does it come with a brass ring like the C6, what?

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

If you're looking for ground connection, I had it planned via the diode's case pin. The PCB is not necessarily connected to the host (may or may not have an outter ring), it can be a driver or simply a contact board for the battery positive connection.

The 17mm board is simply forced into 17mm hole, much like in C6, but not neccesarily case-connected, you can always pinch a wire between it but using the diode's case pin is far more practical.

Re: Introducing new host - Phobos

Beautiful host!

When you release an 18650 version you can count me in for a purchase! That is for sure!

Would knurling on the barrel be available? I always like hosts with a good grippy feel where your hand goes.

Looks like a great design.

I also think the #18650 cell version would be more popular.

The power from the longer cell is 2.5 times the smaller cell.

Making battery barrel 3 cm longer is the least of worries. 18650 version will be in production very soon.

EDIT,
@ jimdt7, I don't do anodizing, sorry, you'll have to ask somebody else to anodize it for you.

Eud, this host looks great - count me in to buy one when you're ready to start making them.

So one more for Clif, got it.

Raj, yeah I noticed that people want 18650 version more than 16340. I was going for small pocket host, practicality, but I guess there's no harm in upgrading it a bit. Perhaps make longer heatsink. Add direct pressfit pocket.

18650 version will be different than this one in more than just battery barrel lenght.

No, not yet. Don't worry I'll update and bump the thread when I got some new designs.

Working on more improvements than just extend the battery barrel.

Also, a new maybe-option just occured... perhaps I'll be able to offer a service of engraving whatever you want on your host... Just need to see a family acquaintance about that, will let you know how it goes.

Awesome! I'm already planning out my first DIY build around your 18650 version. To tell you the truth the reason I prefer 18650s is that I already have several and the proper charger. It would increase my expenses substantially to have to incorporate another battery size.

Will the 18650 verison cost any more than the standard one?

Unfortunately, yes it'll cost more than I have initially planned.

So far, total price could be around $70 or so.

I'll let you know how it goes.
