From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking orders)

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

I'll get down on making them, when they're done I'll let you guys know via PM that they are ready to ship, and payment details etc.

Sounds good?

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

Sounds good! Thanks.

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

I'm in for one too! I need a home for my 12x :D

Great work Eudaimonium +1

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

So that's three more to make this week, alright!

Thanks guys, I'll let you know when it's all ready!

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

tsteele93, Machinist Joe and bobhaha, your hosts are done.

If you'd all be so kind to shoot over a PM so we can discuss payment detail and shipping addresses, we'll get the show on the road.

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

Paid! Thanks, looking forward to building my first complete laser with this one! I have a DTR 405 diode, 445 M145 diode, a ~135mW green module and I'm looking for an 826 red diode. Which color should I build? :D

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

Whichever you want... I'd go for 405nm in it, best heatsinking, and violets are very sensitive to heat.

Now, I have already made the hosts but the clicky switches I ordered quite a while ago still have not arrived.

If anybody wants their host extra fast, but without the switch in the tailcap, let me know, and I'll ship it tomorrow, otherwise we'll wait a few more days for switches to arrive.

Clicky Switch for Flashlights (16mm 5-Pack) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

These in particular, so if anybody has spares, I'll just ship you the host without waiting for mine to arrive.

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

I'll take one, I figure you'll have time to receive the switches before you finish building it !

PM me details please!

Re: From concept to reality - Phobos host (taking pre-orders)

All the details are in the opening post, there's not really much I can add to it.

I really hope the switches arrive really fast, because the host is done in one afternoon.

So, one for you, no problem, I'll send word home to have it done.

Allrighty, PM me when it's done so I can paypal ASAP. How much to ship it to canada, J9J 0E7.

Important update:

The standard focusing adapter that comes with the Phobos Host does NOT properly fit a 405-G-2 lens and 12X 405nm diode. The threaded section of the focusing adapter is too long resulting in the lens being threaded in too far in to the adapter and thus the lens cannot go close enough to the diode to focus to infinity or even to a dot ~10ft out. The current work-around is to epoxy (NOT superglue) the lens in place in the focusing adapter at the apropriate position. Again if you install the lens in the focusing adapter until it is snug you will NOT be able to focus your laser beyond a very large spot a couple feet out.

Remember that the standard version for the Phobos has a head which features an aixiz-replacement press-fit diode recepticle and will NOT accept an aixiz module. My host was custom ordered to direct accept a standard aixiz module, so I cannot test if the problem arises with the press-fit aixiz-replacement piece Eudaimonium offers. The Custom Aixiz-Ready version is available upon request but you must be sure to request it.

I'm currently in talks with Eudaimonium for a custom focus adapter which will work with the 405-G-2 lens and will update accordingly.

Eudaimonium has been exceptionally understanding and very responsive to my custom needs and has been providing the best quality work I could hope for. Though my build is still ongoing (still waiting for the custom head section in the mail, and possibly the custom focus adapter) I'm still very pleased with this host. I just can't wait to finish it!

This is actually true of quite a few custom focus adapters I've seen. For whatever reason, I find that custom focus adapters almost always thread further than stock Aixiz knobs.

The solution (I wouldn't even call it a "workaround", because it's a perfectly acceptable alternative) is as you've said, to affix the lens with something like epoxy.

The other alternative that works quite well is to use a small spacer between the lens and adapter. It can be almost anything - some aluminum, rubber, whatever you have access to.

Haha, awesome. I had actually just PMd you to see how common this was. Disregard the pm then, haha. Yes, my first instinct was to find a spacer. Unfortunately there are no hardware stores within probably 75 miles of where I live and the only thing that carries hardware is Wal-mart. I went today and looked for an 8mm washer to use, the closest they had was 9mm, which is too big. Not sure how I'll proceed at this point, basically I'm just waiting on Eud's reply about the altered focus adapter. I have an Aixiz focusing ring which I can use in the interim though.

If you have 2-part arctic silver, that works well. But any decent two-part adhesive should work. If it wasn't for it being a $50 lens, I'd say just carefully use super-glue. Wouldn't do that with a G lens. However, if you can find the "gel" super glue, you might feel comfortable enough with it's workability to use that.

Aye, I'll epoxy if I have to, but no superglue of any kind is getting near a G2, haha.

I'm thinking about sanding down a couple of these washers at this point...idk how insane that is though...:tinfoil:
