How about instead of having 1k posts, you can enter by join date? 2+ years etc? I've been around a while and although I don't post much I do know a bit.

I really want to see whats going on there, I don't want to have to start spamming :)

just a thought

Seniority alone means nothing in terms of credibility. I'm not trying to sound harsh but a member such as yourself has very little (in terms of posts) to show for even though you've been a longtime member... If you really want to know what's in the vets section, maybe you should ask a "vet" ;) ...

IMO, it's a flawed system; there are "new" members that can outpost me in less than a month. IMO, it should be a combination of posts and seniority.

You join in 2007 to sell your two lasers.
You drop off the grid for two years.
You come back asking what colors are availalbe now.
You want to be considered a "vet" because you "know a bit."

Does that about cover your argument?

I don't think so

I have been here awhile too. I've learned a LOT of stuff here also. I've seen some members get 1K posts in 4 months, but if you read their posts, lots of them are very short, silly replies. I think post quality is important to consider as well.

Now I'm not the best poster here by any means, but I've wondered about the same thing before.

I DO think however that post count is the best way to do it since it is a more solid form of proof that you actually spend TIME here. Hanging out and reading is spending time here as well, but if you're posting stuff too, it probably means that you're also CONTRIBUTING to the forum in some manner. THAT is why I think every post you make, needs to be treated as a single contribution to the forum, before it's posted.

Post quality control is not ideal however, and I think that post count is still the best way to do it.

Just my 2 cents on this...

If you actually hang around here more often, you can get a pretty good idea just by reading the tread titles in the "post feed". For instance, the tread "laser junk box" appears to be some sort of "migratory box of parts"...

There are no "secrets" in there. The "junk box" is simply a large flat rate priority box of "stuff" (some of it is real trash too) that we keep shipping around to those that want to participate.. There are only ~15 people involved.

You take out what you want, and put in what you have, and ship it off again to the next person.

I wasn't implying anything about "secrets", I simply saying that the contents of the vets section can usually be deduced by simply reading the titles of the treads. ;)

The "junk box" is better known as "The great internet migratory box of electronic junk". I use to participate in them until some jerk decided it would be funny to mail me a box full of SMT resistors :yabbmad:...

Kind of confounding. To be completely honest I wouldn't want to be considered a "vet" unless I was sure to myself I had done something to earn it.

The way I view this, the "vets" are those who keep the wheels turning in this place. They've put in the time and sweat equity. Hanging around for 2 years and watching isn't that. Even writing a lot of posts (such as 'lol, yeah') isn't that.

Why would you even WANT to be part of the "vets" section unless the vets themselves felt you were worthy of it, and belonged in there? To me that'd be uncomfortable as hell, and I wouldn't even want that. I'm still -just barely- getting to know people here.

Being "first" (having an early create date) doesn't mean anything; it just means you happened upon things at an earlier time... I guess it's possible that you've been watching all of the threads here intimately, lukring, and feel that you're really integrated into the community but, I don't know.

To me, getting admitted into the Vets section without actually qualifying and feeling qualified would feel a little like showing up to work in nothing but your underpants. YMMV.

As far as secrets go, sometimes they're secrets for a reason. Sometimes for your own good. And sometimes, they're just secrets because it'd be impractical or unwieldy to make a big deal out of them. I'd wager that many of the "secrets" in said section fall into the latter category.

No offense intended.... but just reading your 31 posts from the past
2-1/3 years that you have been here and the question you asked in
PM.... it is obvious you have not spent that time lurking/reading and
keeping up with the Forum laser info...

IMO... you are still a Noob after all this time... I really don't see any
significant contributions to Forum Community to date.. All you seem
to want to do is Sell or trade something....:undecided:
(22 out of 31 of your Posts are for Trading or Selling your stuff)

There is no reason that I can see that you should cut into line to
get into the Vets area before 1000 posts...

I agree with jerry and the other members. Just because you have been around for long enough doesn't mean you are worthy of anything. Take the analogy for example, If I sit out side the airport, watching the planes take off and land for 5 solid years, does that make me worthy of being a pilot?

The answer is no.... Some times, things must be earned, otherwise a monkey might be our next president :undecided:

I must admit I'm kinda jealous when members who've been here a lot shorter than me but posts tons of posts per day gets access to the vet section before me.. :shhh:

Well well, at least I'll have 1000 too by summer this year. :)
