Those baggies were purchased as anti static baggies. I've sold hundreds of diodes and have not received one complaint yet.

I disagree that there is a lack of knowledge about ESD. Several posts above it has already been dealt with that shorting pins is one of the best ways to eleviate the problem. This has been common practice since the year dot. There are experts here that understand it very well. You seem to think this is a new idea or a new problem. It isn't. To back up your claims that we don't know a thing, you post information from a company that appears to pride itself on science based answers that says, in reply to your question of...

"also if the leads and the case
lead are connected together will provide any protection?"

They answer, quite uncomplicatedly and clearly...

"Yes, see above."

I must assume this means read the answer above where it states...

"So for total protection, all parts
should be shorted. If it is a matter of transporting the laser diode, they
can be transported in Aluminum Foil which certainly offers the best
protection."

Looks pretty emphatic to me.

You seem to be good at selectively reading and transposing to your posts what you think is relevant. Where you try to trash yet another members sales reputation you have selectively ignored the part that says Pontiac has shorted the pins with a solder bridge; and we now know this is sufficient protection simply from what you yourself have posted.

As to your diode, you are of course implying that ESD may have caused damage during transit and is flaminpyro's fault for not following your recommendations on ESD? Did you check and confirm how you wanted it sent BTW? There is no question about whether your diode failed due to ESD in transit. If it had failed due to that it would have been dead, full stop. Not working for an hour beforehand.

I wouldn't have any worries eugene420. Your diode will be just fine.

This has gone far enough...

there is a question as to whether the 445 i purchased failed because of ESD, or not. Who knows.
Apparently everybody but you.

I have to say this is the most mindnumbing comment you have made yet. IT WAS ALIVE, IE NOT DEAD, IE NO ESD.

From this point for the rest of your questions and concerns please see the complaint department.

There appears to be a lack of knowledge about ESD and these devices. Already there is a question as to whether the 445 i purchased failed because of ESD, or not. Who knows. By employing good ESD practices it will help to mitigate any issues and the suppliers of these diodes really need to step up to this.
(My bolding)
I had the clear impression that you had it running for a while before burning it off?
Those baggies were purchased as anti static baggies. I've sold hundreds of diodes and have not received one complaint yet.
With your number of sold diodes an unsound shipping method would have caused at least a mentioning here on the forum. :D

Re: Learn to use the multiquote and the edit buttons

I feel my expenditure of around $500 for these two kits complete in order to do this comparison/shoot-out is enough.

Did ya hear that?! Plexus did it all just FOR US.... what a great guy....
does this guy think he's Jesus or something?!

I would not be going against Plexus that hard here, guys.

He did fork out insane amount of cash.

Now, he was trying to do some tests, which counts as a good intention.

He also had insanely insane amount of bad luck to have almost everything short out and die on him.

He may misunderstood some concepts of customer support here and how this hobby is done - but I don't think it's a reason to insult him with massive sarcasm here.

I hate to see fights on this forum. There were some misunderstandings on Plexus' part, sure. But I believe he acted quite maturely, and recognised them.

Plexus, if you would care to issue an apology for going against Jay and Flamin', I think things will be settled right straight once again.

You must not have read all there is to read...

He will not budge in his thinking. In his mind, it's not his fault...

Some of the things he talks about are informative, and he is doing some interesting measurements with heat dissipation and so forth...

But he fails to see that his accusations are damaging to my reputation, and it is not warranted...

I'm speaking only of myself here. I don't want to argue for flamminpyro because his transaction with him is not my business.

plexus, you have no ground to make negative statements towards my customer service. And you have done so on several occasions.

This is where you fail... You seem very intelligent. But why is it that you fail to see this point?

Everything has been shown, and it's very obvious that you killed you first builds on your own. And you just can't accept that it was your own fault.

So you keep on and on with your damaging slander to the reputation of others. Granted, most people here can see that you are wrong. But there are many new ones that may think you are right in some way.

As I told you from the very first, I'm sorry about your loss, but I've had enough of this:

* I did not sell you a diode
* I did not sell you a 'Hot' option (driver installed)

I tried to explain to you some methods of assembly. I don't know what else you want me to do for customer service??

I even offered to give you a driver! Even though I never sold you a 'Hot' option!

But you have declined the offer. And at this point, I will now cancel my offer.

You have no right to go saying any negative comments about my customer service. And in this case, an apology is not enough.

Your slanderous threads and comments should be gone permanently...

He has also said that he was finished yapping about his perceived issues with Jay and Jeff but keeps going on about it.

I would welcome the good information that he can provide and I even gave him rep for doing the comparison originally. He just needs to learn to let it go and move on.

I just read through this entire thread because of complaints and reported posts. Here is what I see

Plexus bought parts from several different people

ALL of those parts were working and as described when he received them

He assembled one laser incorrectly and broke his driver

He did "something" to a working diode to cause his diode to blow

Now my opinion --

Jayrob's kit is very easy to work with. I have assembled many of them without any problems. Plexus' inability to do so is NOT Jayrob's problem. Jayrob is NOT responsible for the driver that Plexus broke because he was unable to assemble the parts correctly

The diode received from FlamingPyro was working when it was received by Plexus. There was a wonderful explanation of ESD damage and protection. However, the fact that it was working for an hour before it died is proof that it was NOT damaged by ESD before Plexus received it. Either Plexus did something to cause the failure or there was some condition beyond the control of FlamingPyro that caused the failure. FlamingPyro is NOT responsible for Plexus blowing the diode.

Finally, it is a "norm" in this forum that we avoid consecutive posting. Please learn to use the multiquote and the edit buttons.

Great work! Shouldn't the end resistor be scraped off the driver for the max current range of 412mA - 1.5A? Here is the PDF for the MicroFlex Driver:
http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/MicroFlexDrive_V5_manual.pdf

The scraping off of the resistor is optional... see were it says "or scraped off". It still has to be bridged to the pad with the resistor there or not for the max sett.

The removal of the last resistor is NOT an "option." Here is what the instructions say (emphasis added)
"The other ranges REQUIRE solder jumpers as shown, or the end resistor to be removed (scraped of is OK) when there is an X on it."

I do not know what leaving that resistor on and connected will do to the electronics of the driver, but the instructions say that it is a REQUIREMENT that it be removed for the current range

Peace,
dave
