What are you trying to say?

And that's exactly why I thank my lucky stars every day that I wasn't alive in the 70s. That and the crappy cars. Oh, and the distinct lack of lasers.

But seriously, making a laser diode is very rewarding, you should try it out. I'm not that far from having a laser pointer of my VERY OWN. Just a few more hurdles to overcome and a little free time. BTW, what's the smallest host anyone has gotten a meredith module into? They don't fit into leadlights, correct? We have everything here to package into 9mm, but not 5.6mm.

That's really neat PBD.
Mind telling us what wavelength you are making?
Also, it is possible to machine the meredith module to a smaller diameter that will fit into more commonly available hosts. Hell, you can just spin it on a drill and take some sandpaper to it until it's the right size. :p

..... a nuclear hand grenade ? .....

No, wait, this is MY type of hobby, need to find something different ..... :eg:

..... take all the parts that you've dismantled for collect your argon laser, and rebuild a working DNA sequencer ? :p

..... lasers from minerals ? :D

j/k ;)

BTW, EF, have you noticed that you have inverted 2 wires, there ?

Hey Dave I still have that 8x bluray laser to send to you. That 200mw green I bought from screambuy is defective so I get money back for it. I can get one of jayrobs builds. Either the 4171 or the 3405... which one would you get? I like the 4171 because its thinner but I also like the 3405 because it takes regular AAA's.

No problem.

I work in III-nitrides (GaN/InGaN), so we do the violet/blue/green end of the spectrum. I'm working in blue/green personally, and I'm currently doing processing of diodes for other people that are doing the crystal growth of the diode material. They grow the layers of materials on the substrate, then I take those samples and process them into working devices. Later, as older students graduate, I'll move over into growth as well; it's just that crystal growth takes a long time to learn to do, and even longer to learn to do it well, so everyone starts off in processing first.

This particular week (what I was doing while posting yesterday), I've been developing a facet coating process as an alternative method for depositing mirror coatings on the end facets of the laser diodes. We have a good process for facet coatings, but the tool we use for it breaks a lot, so I've been developing a process using a different tool so that we have a back-up when our preferred tool breaks.

That decision is totally based in personal preference. I have owned and built in both. Go with the one you like. It's going to sit in your hand.

Does either one have better heatsinking or are they virtually the same?
