whats wrong with aluminum foil? I haven't seen cr123 battery holders.

Could i solder the wires to pennies for an electrical connection?

I have one at 100mA in a Dorcy Metal Gear with heatsink and still going strong, over 3 weeks now. Also a pen sytle at 125mA running for 1 week now with an average cycle time of 2 minutes on and 1 off without without heatsink.

I ran mine at 89.5mA at first, but it was weak, under 70mW after a clear acrylic.. I set it to 96.5mA and it was 72-74mW, yesterday i set it to 109mA and now it's 87mW! If the lens wasn't a bit dirty or scratched, it would probably be 90mW...

But this test diode would seem to be a little weaker.. Some can put out the same power at under 100mA. They seem to vary a bit...

According to Dr_Lava's graph, the middle of the "knee" is just above 100mA. That's where it becomes prominent, and the power doesn't increase much up to 110mA.. So suggested current would be under 100mA, 90mA if you want to be on the safe side..

From what I can see between the two I have the 125mA is alot brighter than the 100mA.

It should be very bright at that current... When i changed the current from 96.5 to 109mA the power jumped from 72 to 87mW and the brightness difference was more profound than i expected....

This diode's P vs. I graph becomes linear again after the knee.. I have a feeling the "weaker" PHR803T diodes just have the knee in a different place.. Didn't have the time to do enough testing yet tho.. But i didn't expect this much difference between 100 and 110mA, because of Dr_Lava's graph.

If you have more diodes, you might want to try a higher current.. I want them to last, so i will try to achieve powers of >100mW with 405nm glass optics instead.

Hey Kenom....are the glass lens coated? Every one that I have are coated for the red.

yeah my mistake I actually took the time to test it and it is coated. so I recind my false statement.

9V block batteries have a very low capacity, because they are made from many tiny 1.5V (or 1.2V) cells in series, to reach 9V.. Ni-MHs are between 170-250mAh. I have not yet seen more than 250mAh.
Alkalines don't have the capacity specified. Could be up to 500mAh, but only for low currents. At 100mA current draw, it might be 300mAh.

You would probably be better off using a good Ni-MH. It would last less than two hours, but you could charge one while using the other.
