Can't belive 8w are enough. I think glass optic is key element here, isn't it? It wouldn't burn without focusing?

It doesn't burn anything whilst the stock lens is in but you can certainly feel the heat

I'm not a big flashlight guy, but this is pretty cool, and it would make a lot of smoke for beam shots! +1 for an epic build, will definitely do this! :beer:

Uh huh. 8.4V for how many milliseconds?

When it comes to $50 laser diodes, we beat them to within an inch of their life.
But a $3 lamp? Take no chances. better under-drive it and get 50% output. :na:

Do you have any suggestions of what other batteries I could use?

Because I'm pretty much limited to the cells I've got at the moment due to the size of the host...

Either way if it's under-driven I'll get a longer life time from the bulb in theory.

EDIT: Video added! Also it'll light sharpied matches no problem but I haven't tried regular ones yet

It would be easier to use a lower voltage lamp instead. Ideally you'd want voltage (or current) regulation. Not because you'll blow the bulb, but to keep the power steady. As it is, the power drops constantly and drastically with use.
 
I'll look into it if I do another build, But at the moment it's working like a treat!

Ya that could work pretty well but three batteries would have a nominal voltage of 12.6V. Possibly burning out the bulb.
I'm sorta confused as to wether its 9V or 7.4V because of you look at the DX customer pictures the bulb is marked as 7.4V but the title says 9V if its actually 7.4V then two 16340s are perfect. If its 9V then three 15270's (CR2) would work fine and possibly a little more bright. :)

So I'll be making one of these for sure. They are actually safer and less expensive then a laser and it still burns stuff :D but I still like the beam of a laser better :)

It would be a nice addition to any collection in my opinion :)

Could it be that the stock lens simply blocks a large amount of IR?

With these setups its not the visible light doing the burning, its mostly the IR which accounts for >90% of the bulbs outpout power.

The reflector is obviously also a factor here: If its a dielectric type it will not reflect the IR forward, which is used in halogen light fixtures where you don't want the heat being blasted at whatever you are illuminating. A metallic reflector like the one that comes with the drop in bulb does reflect IR too aiding in the burning properties.
 
I think it's just that the stock lens is a piece of flat glass, while the lens he replaced it with appears to be an aspheric lens.
