Hi guys! To the pen pros here:

Im in search for a low-power 445 build. I know it has so low power just about threshold and is hard to keep there, but maybe with some tricks (acrylic lens, filter etc) you could build be one near as bright as 5mW 523?
Anyway i will take anything below stable 50mW. thats i can handle safely

- would prefer NewWish or jayrob pen Hosts but will take anything compact
- would prefer AAA over Lithiums but will take 10440 or even 18650 too

Please make me offers! i take the most affordable for me then :) Thanks

Is it being powered by 2 10440's OK? My experience with powering this diode with regular AAA's are less than acceptable. I have a module on my desk that I could re-work into a low powered pointer.

You realize that lower output does NOT mean lower price in a custom made laser, right?

It takes just as long, and uses the same parts, to build a 50mW laser as it does to build a 1W laser.

OK. It is a little less expensive because the host is less expensive.

Peace,
dave

The problem is that the threshold current is like ~270mA. So even though the output may be low it'll still be eating up a few watts. So the diode will be VERY inefficient at those currents.

IMO you should get a driver that can accept a TTL mod input and run it with a simple 555 timer circuit with a very high frequency but low duty cycle, like 5%. Then the diode will be pulsed and the mean output will be 1/20th of the the normal power. In other words the diode is still being run at like 600mA but only 5% of the time.

All that will be hard to put in a handheld host but it can be done.

Why you don't join CNI GB
http://laserpointerforums.com/f55/now-447nm-cni-lasers-gb-11-a-53409.html#post749569
It should not cost you too much, the 5mW cost $40

The $45 pens in the GB are GREEN (532nm).

The only 445nm lasers in the GB are <500mW at $295

How much would you aproximate?

Diode = $50
Driver = $17 (or $28)
Module = $5
Host = $15
Batteries = $7
Misc. = $5
Labor = $50
Shipping = $12
PayPal fees = $5

Total = $166 (or $177)

Peace,
dave

i see there is confusing there
RA_pierce was referring to 5mW 445nm pen and glenn quoted the 5mW greenie

Yes, I also didn´t believe my eyes. But seemed to be too good to be true :spank:
