Would this soldering gun work?






I would recommend a better quality one. You can find a good one at Fry's or something in person. Like 20 bucks? The biggest thing is getting a small tip. Like as small as you can find. Will help a LOT with driver soldering. I ruined many a driver with my first iron. Looked exactly like the one you linked actually.
 
Get a 30W iron instead. 60W will get too hot and ruin small joints.
 
I also recommend getting a soldering station- I got a 40W weller iron (a non adjustable iron), and it is ridiculously hot. hard to solder almost, because the iron can't hold any solder, it basically burns it.
 
I figured you wont do a lot of soldering that's why I recommended a 30w iron. If you plan to solder a lot of things, a soldering station is the way to go. I got a Yihua 936 brand station from HobbyKing and I'm pretty happy with it. It does everything I expect for its price.
 
I have one that looks exactly the same except its 30W and it works fine. I bought it at Walmart some time ago because my other two started to quit on me after more than 20 years, however I do agree with all of the above.

If you don't have a soldering iron yet and you want to build some lasers then you should be aware that your going to need some other things too. At least a DMM and I would recommend a helping hands, preferably one with a lighted magnifier, also wire strippers, wire cutters, pliers, tweezers and who knows what else.

Those Aoyue brand stations are pretty decent too. At least get something that has its own dedicated holder and sponge. Those ones where you have to lean the iron on top of some crappy flimsy stand (like this) are just awful.

Also remember to check out some of the soldering threads on this forum for tips on how to keep your gear in good condition and what else to buy.
 
A shot of something smooth will steady the hands :beer: shaky hands have probably botched as many circuits as shitty tools.

The analog version of that iron is like $40 cheaper and I've used those they are great!
