I came across this interesting addon to the 501B host. It's for turning it into a latern.

I'm curious what kind of reflection it would cause. If it truly reflects all the light evenly in all directions, and what kind of power that would amount to when we're running >2W lasers.

Essentially, I'm wondering if anyone knows if this would be safe.

Check it out...

I appears to have a white plastic dome to diffuse the light, but if this was removed, the beam would go directly into the cone and reflect off.
Surely the beam focus can be adjusted to cover a larger area of the cone surface to reflect more.

It really serves no purpose, but it could be another fun, dumb attachment for a couple of bucks.

how much is it? maybe some people should buy it and test it out. depending on price id grab one and test it out, could be a cool addition to lasers or could be crap but until tested, who knows

I think it would be perfectly safe. Leave the white piece on and just unfocus some to cover more area and avoid burning it. At that point it may as well be an led, since the diffuser will take away the coherent properties of the light.

it seems to completely replaces the head of the 501B :(
This would make it impractical to swap around.....

I'm finding too much cool shit at freakishly low prices....trying to avoid buying it all lol
black 501B shells for $1.70.....so tempting.

Like the whole host? Battery tube, head, end cap and all for $1.70?

i found the lantern for ~$20 on fleaaby but where you finding your deals? $1.70 for a 501b is a STEAL!

Dude, get some cheap chinese CNC place to make heatsinks for a few bucks and put together a GB!

So uh.. Why would you want to pay 300USD for a coherent light source and then turn it into a lantern that only cost 30?
