Obviously. They don't put the observing instruments right in the middle of the LHC collission area either.

It would be remotely comparable to focussing a laser pointer in inch in front of the laser, and then looking from the side what happens at the narrowest point of the beam. With a laser pointer nothing would happen (apart from some optical tweezer effect), but even with very moderately powered lasers you can see air breakdown.

These high energy experiments will probably be done in hard vaccuum though, just to see what the extreme energy density and gradients 'do to space', if they do anything at all.

It's alway hard to say if fundamental research is essential... the nature of the work is such that you often cannot predict what applications there will be.

Perhaps it will yield a cheap and available energy source that would greatly help to solve the US trade deficit, but there never are any guarantees. I suppose that over the long run its fairly clear that fundamental research eventually brings great benefit, though not always to the one that paid for it initially.

I see large cuts in spending on sciences here in holland, and i think this will ultimately be a great loss. Good researches lose their jobs in the fundamental field and move on elsewhere, but chances of them returning once the crisis lifts are slim.
