They DID spend $1.5B on the economy. They spent it on a giant laser. Where do you think that money is going? It's used to pay contractors to build the facility, other companies to produce the raw materials (concrete, steel, etc.), scientists and engineers to design the laser, support staff to run and administer the facility, etc. How many people do you think will be employed by a $1.5 BILLION dollar research project? TONS. How much of that money flows back into the economy? ALMOST ALL OF IT.
When the government "spends" money on a project the money isn't going away, it's COMING BACK.
One of the greatest minds ot the 20th century.
This applies to billion dollar lasers as well.
