World's First Laser Nose Hair Trimmer!!!

OK, so I had one of those rotary type nose hair trimmers that had been laying around for ever because of cutting the hair it ripped out!!!

It looked similar to this:

I also had a cheap 5mW red module I bought over a year ago doing nothing so I thought what the heck. Here's a link to the laser module: 650nm 5mW laser module.3.2V to with lens 650 nm OEM | eBay
I'm real curious to know what kind of diode is in it because I turned the pot up and it burns almost as well as my LOC at 400mA. I'll have a LPM soon so I can finally measure it. It has about an hour on it. I have a video of it burning but it was taking with my Nikon point and shoot so it's not the best quality. I'll post it if anyone's interested.

So here are some pics of the build:

I started this project months ago and just not finished it so I don't have any pics of it before I tore it down. Where you see the wires soldered on there sat a small motor. It takes one AA battery so I'm using one 14500.

In the next pic, where the focus ring visible is where the metal part of the trimmer that house the ripping, I mean cutting blades. I removed that and dremmeled out the openings to snugly hold an AixiZ module. Then used some JB Weld to hold it in there.

What was going to be a unique part of this build was this trimmer had a small white LED, you can see it in the pick below. But I'm pretty sure I blew it by not wiring in a resistor.

Haha you would smell nothing all day long except your own burned nose hairs!

I wonder why that module hasn't died yet.. We'll have to see how long it lasts!

Kool. Iam also curious what diode is being used. Can you take a picture of it looking down the Module where the lens goes.

LOL, the title of this thread made my laugh, at first i though some n00b was asking if he could trim his nose hair with a laser....But your no n00b

Hehehe, as it happens I have one of these nose hair trimmers as idly lying around well, but cheap chinese
version instead of Philips. I'll keep this build of yours in mind!

I can do this later today when I get home. I can't wait to get my LPM to test it. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a 16X diode in there and they just turn the current way down for the "5mW" modules. But wouldn't that be cool? A $5.00 16X red LD with a driver attached?

cool build, + rep for recycling the nose hair trimmer :gj:. What about a heat sink though? I bet it gets hot pretty quick.

^^^ In regards to the heat sink, I was thinking the same thing as I was building it. I just figured I would use short duty cycles. But I had it on for at least 4 minutes straight while I was snapping pictures and the module barely felt warm which was a pleasant surprise.

Wow that's surprising must be a pretty efficient diode there, and you said your running it at 400ma, that's awesome.

No. Im running my LOC at 400mA. Im not sure what current this one is set at. I figured it was a cheap $5 red module so I recklessly turned the pot. :eg: I should have my LPM soon so I'll post back here the results.

Anyway nice build. Never heard of anyone building a laser in a nose hair trimmer.
