Well, Windows 10 is the first windows to no longer have floppy disk support by default, so that's something, and they didn't really go out of mainstream use until around 2005, with a steep decline starting in mid to late 90's. (Remember all those AOL disks! )
From that time we've had the evolution to higher density formats in the form of dvd, and blu-ray, and we might even see another type of disk, but probably not, given the rise of streaming. (Same as the reason cited for killing windows media center.)
To me an even more forward indicator is the price of optical drives... Kingwin Internal IDE CD/DVD-ROM - Slickdeals.net when companies are pushing products out for the price of shipping alone, you know the end for them is near.
I do miss taking the rubber balls out of old mice, and that satisfying click from the floppy disk cover. Not to mention I got out of a few late assignment hand ins by purposely damaging the disk before giving it teachers and professors :eg:
