This. The host and the 100% duty cycle are the main reasons I bought an Arctic. I also like how the lens caps protect the lens from debris and moisture. And I wish someone made shirts saying "I survived the Wicked Lasers Arctic 2010" I'd probably buy one.

See.
I would never consider a lie to be a selling point.
Can you please explain to me what 100% duty cycle means?

Have they stopped claiming it had active cooling technology?

Peace,
dave

It looks like they have stopped claiming that. And I think I probably mean to say continuous duty cycle rather than 100%.

"Thermoregulation"... lol

AFAIK, I think they DID used to have thermocooling, but nowadays that's definitely not in use. I actually care more than most people about duty cycles, I can drain the entire battery on the Arctic and it would only be warm...

What batteries do you use? The longest I use my Arctic is when I go walking at night. I use Tenergy 2600mah with PCB, and I have my Arctic on for about 40 minutes straight at the most, and the host only warms up a little before I head inside. I've never drained the batteries, so I really don't know how long they'd last.

I just used the ones they provided, I know they aren't protected but so far I haven't had any issues with them. The batteries last around an hour, I've gotten closer to an hour and a half once :p (assuming full power, running until the cut-off kicks in)

Hmmm.. did you LPM the laser output as you drain the battery..
Perhaps that will give us some insight as to how are they doing it

No I didn't, I didn't have a LPM back then... but now that you bring it up, I might do just that...

But based on the Arctic tear-downs on the forum, it just looks like passive cooling via heatsink

OK. What is the difference? What does "continuous duty" mean?

I opened and rebuilt more than one Gen I and Gen II Arctics
There are a couple of tear down threads here in the forum so you can see how they were and are built for yourself

There was never any thermal regulation.
People say stuff like this without realizing what they have said.

The Arctic has a very small module/heat sink. Here it is

That is a 5mm socket for perspective.
It is a very insignificant heat sink
The C6 has a much more robust heat sink
The diode presses directly into the rear of that piece.
That piece then screws into the host
The only module to host connection is at that thin portion of threading

Now, the 445nm diode is producing just as much heat as in any one of our hand helds made here.
That is the nature of the diode
There is no active cooling in the laser (no TEC and no fan)
There is no air movement in the laser
The only way to move the heat away from the diode is by it migrating from the module, through that threading, and into the body of the host

Now here's where it starts to relate to your statement
If the host is NOT heating up, then the heat from the diode is NOT being transferred from the module to the host
If the host is not heating up, then the heat is staying at the diode and module

People say that their laser didn't get hot like it is a good thing
If the host is not getting hot, then the laser is not moving the heat

A host staying cool is a bad thing ;)
This is true unless the laser has a MASSIVE heat sink. Even then after a minute or so, the heat sink will be "saturated" if it isn't moving the heat out to somewhere.

Peace,
dave

Amen, but then that would be rather weird wouldn't it?
1 hour of constant operation without any active cooling and an inadequate heat sink that doesn't even channel the heat outside the module
How is the diode even still alive lol

It's one of the reasons for the high failure rate
This was especially true early on, when everybody believed that they could turn it on and leave it on ;)
On top of that WL "flooded" the front end with thermal grease
Thermal grease should be used sparingly between contact points
A thick layer of grease works as a fine insulator

Luckily the 445 diode is pretty robust.

Combine that with the crappy batteries they sent out wearing down quickly AND the fact that as the diode overheats the output goes down and you have "magic" thermoregulation ;)

Peace,
dave

you might as well as call it automatic failure device

I love rebuilding several of the WL hosts into quality lasers

Besides, your wife only had that one affair
All of her lies and deceit were simply supporting that one affair
OK. I know that she lied to you fairly regularly before the affair, but that is all in the past
She's not cheating on you now (that you know of)
Her friends are all telling you that she's not cheating anymore, right?
She didn't take another man to bed last night, did she?

You should just forget it and trust her

Peace,
dave

I just saw this....

"Thermoregulation"

I like the sound of that :) I have "Thermoregulation" on my laser cutter, my minions call it water but they are clearly uneducated fools.

Buy first laser = pile of junk
Buy second laser = nice item so far
Buy third laser = statistically a 50/50 change of it being DOA or working when it arrives based on previous history.A 50% failure rate isn't good news for any company (hell a 2% failure rate would be a huge worry for me)

If I give somebody money and they smak me round the head with Ghandi's 3 year old flip flops I'm probably not going to give them any more money.

Just an opinion of course :)

best wishes

not sure of the exact wording but--
"those forgetting the mistakes of the past are destined to repeat them"
