Why watercooling is a bad idea...

Not sealed, I used a 1/2 foot T-line normally topped up about half way. When I replace it, I'm going to use a fill-cap through the casing roof, however, to prevent leaks being an issue. Here is how my upgrade looks at the moment, presuming I can get the cash together:

  • ATI 4890
  • i7 920
  • Some i7-compatible mobo
  • D-Tek Fuzion V2, quad core nozzle, 1366 mounting kit (or just custom-make myself a 1366 mount kit for the V1 and make a metal nozzle - plastic one got soft and melted when pump failed.
  • Fill-cap
  • Perhaps replacement pump, depends if current one is reliably working.
  • More tubing

Hopefully, I can get all of that on an interest-free loan from my dad until my birthday (11th Jan).
 





Man you will love the i7 920 : ) i have mine over clocked to about 3.6Ghz Stable at 1.200V : ) nice an cool to, never gets above 56'C on air : ) the cores them self's never see above 64'C

but have to disagree with you on the graphics card am using 2x evga gtx 285 in sli their awesome if you can afford it if not ATI is ok

just a note on the current list of graphics cards
ATI has already released a whole range of DirectX 11 compatible cards, while Nvidia is still to release even one.
* #10 – ATI Radeon HD 4870
* #9 – NVidia GeForce GTX260 AMP! (Zotac)
* #8 – ATI Radeon HD 4890
* #7 – Nvidia GeForce GTX275
* #6 – ATI Radeon HD 5850
* #5 – ATI Radeon HD 4870X2\ tied but the 4870x2 take more power so they put it lower.
* #4 – NVidia GeForce GTX285/
* #3 – ATI Radeon HD 5870
* #2 – NVidia GeForce GTX295
* #1 – ATI Radeon HD5970
Any of these cards in your desktop and you should be happy. but you get 2 of any of these in your desk top and you will be in heaven.
 
hu maybe I will go back to ATI Idk I really like the evga nvidia cards though just because of the support and it doesn't really look like that much of a difference in performance or price compared to their top series except the dx factor ...... can't wait for the gtx 300 series to come out : )

and must agree 2x gtx 285 and you can play any game highest settings i am getting 180fps avg in MW2 with max every thing.
 
I love watercooling. I use a T-line to fill/bleed and clamps on every barb. Pump failure can be a difficult thing to diagnose. Especially the way you described it. What pump are you using? I don't see any mention of that. With the card, soaking it in high purity isopropyl might work. It might be better to just get a new one depending on how old it was.

I use clamps on every barb too, never had an issue with that. I just broke up from school, so I'm going to give the pump a good testing and see if it is reliable or not (I expect it isn't). I'm using a D5, the one with a RPM "meter" output, but I have a D5 Vario as well, unused so far. I'm not sure about the card, it's still dead after drying off, but it had another separate issue with a capacitor breaking off, which I never had resolved. Currently, it will spin up when powered but I get no signal output. I'm going to see what the motherboard is doing at that stage, but the hard discs don't whir up so I'm presuming the boot sequence doesn't go any further than initialising the GPU.
 
I water cool my CPU and GPU and have for a very long time. I love doing it.

You just have to keep in place safety measures. Like I have my BIOS thermal protection set to 80C. The fans for my radiator are on a controller and my wife had turned them down for whatever reason. Kept wondering why the comp kept shutting down on her. Sure figured it out when I got home.

The only problems I have had with a computer was when I piece of lint got caught in the slot where my X-Fi Titanium was plugged into. The comp literally caught on fire. Good thing I was home. I blow my cases out all the time and use fan filters now.

I have been trying to get some reclaimed HFE-7200 for a long time though, never can have enough insurance.
 
I had safety mechanisms, the pump RPM warning and CPU thermal cutoff, but sadly I ignored the RPM warning, and it turns out that the maximum temperature allowed is still more than enough for the water to expand out of the loop. I now have an ATI 4890 (received it for Christmas :) ) and am waiting for an Apogee XT to come back into stock, before I finish my upgrade to an i7/P6T, finally disposing of my old, crappy Striker II Extreme.

When that happens, I'll be looking to sell a lapped Core 2 Quad, Q6600, second revision (G0?). Anyone interested in buying one? I'd be looking at £125 shipped or so, given that it's been lapped on glass down to 10 microns, can clock above 3.6ghz, and has been treated well, water-cooled for most of its life. Price is flexible of course, but the above price includes recorded signed-for shipping anywhere in the world.
