Why ebay Safety Glasses are..bad

There's no excuse for the-cheapest-glasses-more-bucks-saved attitude regarding eye protection in laser hobby. Period.

Better invest more funds (not necessarily 100$ up) in some good quality glasses then regretting it later.

As a sarcastic classic may say, burn after reading:whistle:
 





I believe its just "needed" to post that here.

I've gone to the hardware store to buy some pliers and screws yesterday... And saw those "laser safety goggles" for selling. It didn't said "laser goggles", it was together with the other ones... The seller said its just dyed but didn't said its use.

IMO those are not laser related. The green ones are just for physical protection...
 
I have sent him a message, and i must say, IT was my OWN fault. In the description it says Visible Light Transmittance: >55% so i guess half of the power passes through? So 100mW?
Having that in mind is it safe to use for burning matches in close up distances?

No. Visible Light Transmittance (VLT, for short) is how much light passes thru, except the wavelengths that the goggles can protect!

It all depends on the wavelengths it cover, type of protection, etc...

The power that passes thru (for the protected wavelength) is indicated by the optical density (OD). OD 5 means around 0.01mW...
 
The goggles I ordered have arrived (These: 600nm 700nm Safety Glasses Red Laser Protection Goggle | eBay). I don't actually have a red laser yet, so I can't test them. However, the plastic does feel a lot thicker than your average eBay goggles. Also on the goggles, it says 'T-Rex' which is the brand of goggles. They look exactly the same as the picture. I've seen other T-Rex goggles but none that are of this style, normally they look like the ones shown here: T-REX Laser Safety Goggles for 650nm Red Laser

Gun You should know better, the Chinese like to say/do anything for a sale.
Those are the same glasses that failed in the test above, they are just blue not green.

You just can't buy cheap laser safety glasses.
Eagle pair at a minimum and certified glasses should be your goal.
The OEM glasses are $88 Us for the blues and greens, But the ones for reds 650nm etc. are $149 US. yes they cost a lot compared, but really do you want to see in your later years? And this is way more important for the younger members, you have years of chances to get flashed ahead of you.
I'll buy a pair and get some numbers with my LPM.

Actually no, they're not the same.

These goggles have been tested by Thejoker301 and they're actually quite good, although he didn't recommend them for anything over 300mW.

Ok, but still get good ones.
I'm still going to order a pair and see how they do as I need a pair for reds and my reds are all under 125mw.
 
An important safety goggle specification, and one that is usually missed in these threads, is how long the filter material will take a direct strike before failing. That is, does it block the laser beam for half a second before the material fails? 5 seconds? More? Good-quality goggles will be able to withstand a direct strike at a given power level for a specified amount of time. Goggles that you bought on eBay for $9... who knows? The material could fail after a quarter of a second at 100 mW, you just have no idea. Even if you don't buy your goggles from Laserglow, please buy goggles which are properly rated and certified. You only have two eyes and you need them both if you enjoy having depth perception.

An excellent point. I think the ones I got from OEM are rated for at least 10 seconds. I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't even think about Laserglow selling glasses sine you're in Canada and OEM being in the US but will remember to mention it in future when suggesting places to get them.
 
I have a pair of the red Chinese glasses and I'll do a test with my 445nm 2.75W and see how much gets through and how long they can take it.
