Hey all this is the start of my WhiteFusion "Time Machine" review/multimedia thread. I will be updating this with better pics n' vids as i take them.

This project has been a couple months in the making but has overall been a great experience! :yh:

I got to give a very special thanks to a few people for making this happen. Flaminpyro (a fellow Oregonian) thanks so much for constructing this amazing project and of course to FML for his amazing driver and SightFx for the kit and remote with out you guys this would not have happened. Flaminpyro's work has been very clean and professional, he continually gave me updates with pictures on how things were going and where we should go next. I would definitely say I am VERY satisfied with the finished project!

Here's a couple pic's to get me started and my first video post..
Please excuse the end of the video.. And any suggestions would be great.

Does it lack a blu-ray? I didn't see any violet, magenta, or sky-blue.

~1 minute in I can see a little little bit of blu, It should be a lot brighter than that tough. Try turning the mA to the bluray diode up, otherwise it looks blown :(

You wouldn't see anything if it was blown, since it would LED and not lase, you wouldn't get any kind of pattern on the wall especially with blu-ray being on the border of the visible spectrum, an LED would be too hard too see.

From looking at the top of his box, there's only two switches, so either theres a switch too turn on all lasers and one for the motors, or two switches one for green one for red.

It doesn't look like there's a blu-ray, unless that pinky colour in the video is the red mixed with blu-ray.

Nice build though, the whitefusion kits are so fascinating and definitely some of the best kit in the laser hobby :)

Yeah I think I need to up the power on the blu ray, believe it or not there is a 12x in there!
maybe my camera dose't pick up the blu-ray as much... Oh and there's a lot more than the two switches, one switch turns it on and the other changes the direction of the spiros. Also on top there's two buttons to manually change the mode and option. And the other two knob s on top changes the speed of the two spiros enclosed! I'm still messing with my camera to see what settings work the best.... More to come soon.

P.S. The mode on the FML driver I used for the video was sweeping through vibrant and bright colors i think, so that might be why you can't see as much blu-ray.

It's an FML driver. One button changes the program (it has ~29 programs) and the other button changes the options within the program. The programs cover a wide range, from static colors to revolving colors that cover certain palettes. You can look up FireMyLaser's info about it to get more info on the driver. But 2 buttons is all it's supposed to have.

As far as the visible colors, remember that cameras have trouble reproducing that deep violet light, and that's no less true when other colors are present too. Not to mention the fact that your LCD computer screen can't properly display all the colors the laser can actually output, and you end up with multiple sources of digital encoding errors and physical limitations on color reproduction between the colors coming out of his laser and the colors you're seeing on a computer screen.

after viewing your video, I've come to the conclusion your camera just doesn't see bluray well.. I saw a quick flash of it off to the side (not in the actual spyro) and you can see the gaps where the bluray is but it's just not being picked up by your camera. Easiest way to tell is shine just the bluray at the camera and see what it looks like..

On a side note, "time tunnel" I'm sure that the makers of quantum leap would be happy to know that they have had such an impact on lasers in general that the tunnel is now forever attributed to their show.

Yep, this is it. I have almost the same camera (PowerShot A700 instead of eugene420's A560) and it's hardly sensitive to 405nm in compare to other cameras. I have to use my brother's pentax every time I want to take a beamshot with this wavelength :(

BTW, eugene420, do you know CHDK firmware? If not, you have to check it out! :D

Nice white laser you have there!
Strange how your camera doesn't see blu-ray that well. My camera can see blu-ray even better than a green laser.

Great thanks for the heads up on the camera I had no idea you could update the software with CHDK! Looks like a good deal! Also I bet there's a way to mess with the color ratio or contrast so I can pick up that elusive 405nm
Oh yeah and how did you know what kind of camera I used? I'll use my girlfriends Nikon D 5000 next time!

It's not like permanent software update. It only looks like a firmware update for the camera, and when you click "update firmware" in menu the CHDK is turned on. But when you switch the camera off and back on, then there's still old firmware, so the CHDK is only on the memory card and doesn't affect the camera's program memory at all (IMO that's a big advantage). The most interesting features for me are: enabling RAWs, overdriving shutter speed (normally, the longest time is 15s, with CHDK you have 64s and you can disable dark frame noise reduction if necessary), motion detection (I use it for taking x-ray pictures), live histogram, changing video compression ratio, battery indicator in both percents and volts.

Unfortunately, we can do nothing about the 405nm issue with our cameras I think. I took a pic in RAW and tried to make the beam visible using a computer, but it's not possible. If you simply increase blue in the picture then everything turns bluish so this is not a good way. I think the problem is either some very low level image processing in the camera (not changable) or even a physical properties of the optics used in these Canons.

I just downloaded one of your photos and checked the metadata. Check this: link :D

Here's some new pictures with a better camera.. Hey do any of you know how I can upload a larger movie on here? I can take higher resolution film but they end up being pretty big files. Hope you enjoy, I think I'm getting the hang of this now but it would be nice to have a fog machine :D

Hey do any of you know how I can upload a larger movie on here? I can take higher resolution film but they end up being pretty big files.
You can compress the file. I would recommend VirtualDub software with Xvid 1.1.3 codec. Open video file with VirtualDub, go to menu 'video'->'compression' and select the codec, then click "configure" and set target bitrate. If you don't know what to set, try 1000kbps first. The greater bitrate the better output video quality but larger file. Notice that in canons with CHDK installed you can change the bitrate of recorded videos in the camera itself! If you don't need audio track in the file go to menu 'audio' and select 'no audio'. Then 'file'->'save as AVI...' and that's all :) Nice pictures by the way :D
