Where to start? HeNe Gas Laser

I don't know the specs of the tube, so I am not of much use.

3mA is still pretty low for most tubes. 3.5-4mA would have you on the right track.
 





Not sure if it's similar to the MG-171's. Otherwise I cannot find anything on them. Length of tube?
 
Mirror to mirror its about 9 inches. Has 3.6 written in sharpie on the glass. That was something done when it was manufactured because I pulled this tube out of its case myself. Curious as to if that 3.6mA optimum.
 
I think the 299's are around a KV @ 5mA..? maybe that's true....I'll keep looking

Edit: Got it. its about the same as mine, at almost 2KV as the complete head @ 6mA

05-LPM-340-065th This small standard HeNe power supply provides a tube current of 6.5mA. The ignition voltage is about 10 kV, the operating voltage range is specified with 1700V to 2450V. The (measured) my tube running voltage is about 1950V at a current of about 6 mA, so very typical of normal data for an average helium-neon tube.

I'd say 6.5mA, ~1.6-1.75KV. 9in (222mm) matches up to most 2-4mW 632.nm tubes.

3.6 could be for 3.6mW.

EDIT: Second set of numbers is meaningless. Model number is 05-LxP/R-xxx.

LGR/P - 543.5nm
LYR/P - 594.1nm
LOR/P - 611.8nm
LIR/P - 1523nm
LFR/P - 3391nm

LHB - Brewster 632.8nm tube
LGB - Brewster 543.5nm tube

P - Linearly polarized
R - Randomly polarized

try daguin, he is always selling some multiline argons and may be able to hook you up with something.

also try the PL forums, DJMatt is currently selling a bunch of Argons and he is very reputable also.

For a reference, the last 3 high power HeNe lasers I bought from ebay were all over 12mw and all cost less than $75 with the power supply. But you have to know what to look for.

But as mentioned, multiline HeNe lasers are out of your range.

Well SKeeZ. If ypu can find a PSU putting out what was described above then ill let the tube go for dirt cheap. If not it may be cheaper to get a tube with supply from the bay. Let me.know what you can find!
 
If I get 2 or more of these green tubes working, I may sell you one for dirt cheap.

Homework assignment. Explain to me how the basic HeNe works.

I know how copy/paste looks ;) If you can show understanding of it, I'll give you a deal you can't say no to ;)

I want mirrors and windows, getter/spider, anode/cathode, effects of varying bore diameter, and the difference between a 632.8nm tube, and a 543.5nm tube. Other than wavelength :p

It won't be quick, but it will get you to understand the beauties of gas lasers better :)

I'll need to get a PSU from Sam for the higher powered tubes. Not looking forward to that price tag...

Though I suspect the greens will run off of the 6.5mA PSU I have.
 
Most greens require 6.5mA. Exceptions being the very small tubes, some need 5.0mA. Even then, most of your small tubes are still 6.5mA. This is due mostly (I theorize) to the altered gas mixture needed for 543.5nm lasing. This is a very low gain line, and I think it's a desperate attempt to ionize the mixture with more success.

The mirrors in 543.5nm tubes are also VERY HR. Usually the HR mirror will be 99.98% HR@543.5. It's crazy high.

Then the far IR (3.39uM) can be as low as 50% ;)

I'm excited to see if he takes my homework challenge for a cheap tube :whistle:

I would challenge you to the same "homework challenge" but I am pretty sure you already understand HeNes enough.

Greens can be found for cheap on the bay if you look hard enough.
 
yeah. I've seen them around in lots of values. just got no money....need more greens to get greeNes :D
