Where to get power supply's?

Hey guys! After reading extensively ive decided to build a TEA laser. But I've already ran into a problem. I need 6kV DC and I can't find a psu within my price range. I really don't want to pay a lot of money. Is there any fairly cheap power supply's at that voltage? Thanks.
 





A common outlet for a Nitrogen/TEA laser is the neon sign transformer. I have no idea the price range on these, but I wouldn't assume TOO much. Look through surplus shops, you may get lucky. Fleebay isn't the only outlet ;)

Following this thread, I have a TEA laser in my future. I need a pump source for a tunable dye ;)
 
Ive been building one!

Look on ebay. Dont go for one of the really high voltage NSTs for an TEA laser. I believe the optimal range is 4-6kv.

If you ask me, the hardest part is finding the dielectric. Saran wrap is too thin and arcs through. any other flat plastic I had that was big enough was much too thick. I think I'm going to try multi layer plastic wrap? Also had an idea of buying some really big plastic bags (like sealable sandwich bags) and cutting the seams for flat sheets. They are the perfect thickness I think.

Maybe layering plastic wrap, oiled paper, plastic wrap would work.

I also thought about spraying it with a few layers of arcylic clear coat paint for dielectric.

It isn't hard to build a HV supply at all.
A rewound flyback properly (or un-properly) drove should be more than enough... :thinking:

A bit expensive at $7.50 for ten, but they are self stick. I think that would be a good feature for this use. Also 10 is probably all i'll ever need. These are 3mil thick.

Just bought it. (the 10 pack self stick) Damn amazon. Every time I go to buy something on amazon I throw a few more things in. I went in buying a $7.50 item (and I have prime so free shipping) end up making a $35 order. Good thing the google chromecast was out of stock cause I probably would have got one of those too.

Who new you could buy an OBD2 (car diagnostic port) reader that bluetooth connects to your phone for $12?

No, you need to get one that is an actual transformer not a solid state one.

This is a great deal if you don't mind replacing the wires!
I'll probably buy it if you or bloom dont want it ;)

Not sure if it's really any help. A couple years back I put together and got lasing a TEA laser.
The dielectric that I used is a clear sheet of over head projector plastic. It seemed to be just the right thickness.
Good luck with your laser. It's a lot of fun to put together from scratch a working laser!

The only thing holding me back is the mess it would leave in my room. If I were to do this, I'd have to take leave for a couple days to build, then clean up, and go back to work. Ha!

Go ahead and get the transformer, I won't be building for a while, plus I'm not buying anymore lasers until SELEM after I get that 455nm laserBTB from Dr. Laser.

Also not so sure on the noise of these things...I have a suitemate and thin walls. I feel like a dorm is not the environment for one of these.
