where do you guys buy your lens mounts for your scanners?

mmk. Ill try that with one of the z-bolt heatsinks i already have...I might aswell just add another heatsink (about the same size as the z-bolt one..) to the top. It has a fan attached to it but the fan is really a pain to take off. I had to cut and pry it off with various tools to get it off of a spare i had...Oh well, more cooling :D

Yes. You solder it just like that.

Regarding the fan: I worry that the thermal connection between the two heatsinks will be poor sice the top of the z-bolt heatsink has ridges on it instead of a flat surface.. it should work well enough, though, since the DVD reds never seem to get all that hot in a z-bolt heatsink.

Sorry for the threadjack matt. EF: do i just tune the DAC to 5V or 9v? Things was talking about how his is at 9V or something...

If i tune it to 0V offset and 5V gain then will it swing +/- 5v? Will that allow the full scan angle?

Have you found a case for your scanner yet? I am still waiting for a response...There also might be some on ebay. Yobresal got a case with 15k scanners but everything else gutted for like 200 dollars shipped. A really good deal. It would probably be perfect for a monochrome. I think brewcitymusic got it (for his shows), but there will probably be some good ones on ebay if you look around. Ill keep an eye out for you...also we covered this a little bit in my thread. Not much though :(

Keep asking questions! Ill try to answer them..If not EF/things will chime in :)

No problem.. besides, now I 'll just be able to forward people to this thread for detailed info. So far, this one has been the most detailed yet. The more info there is about DIY scanners here, the better. It's one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of the laser hobby.

About your question Muffin_Man.. You tune the DAC to +-5V maximum on the correction amp for the galvos. The modulation only requires 0-5V. That is all the higher the amp will go without distorting. If you end up using a laser with analog modulation instead of TTL, then anything over +5V on the modulation channels could potentially damage the laser on some systems.

anyywayyy, so when you wanna tune your DAC, (once its finished),
you download max.wav to tune it and use windows media play or somethin else. right? i think this is correct.

after this what do you do next? is there anything else you need to tune?
 
No more tuning.. after that it's hook everything up, solder and insulate all connections and start learning Spaghetti.. If you want inspiration and ideas about how to lay it all out, there are many pictures in these laser show threads of peoples scanners.. just browse around and see what you find. Looking at their layouts will help you understand how it all goes together.

so there is nothing you need to do on the laserboy correction amp?
just hook it up after your done tuning the DAC?
 
^For that question you're gonna have to refer to my tutorial.. The correction amp is part of the DAC and it is what you would have been tuning. The DAC consists of two parts , the sound card and the correction amp. Together they are a DIY soundcard DAC. Read the whole tutorial, you'll see what I mean..
 
Matt you should email the customaluminumbox guy. He is REALLY nice. Im awaiting a response about getting holes made in the box to fit a couple 40mm fans/db25/power port.

Alright. Just making sure. Now that i think about it, it seems that it will be REALLY easy. I am actually looking foward to it.

I agree. This is probably one of the best parts of the hobby. the many beams are like having multiple lasers all at once :D

Ah.. The galvo amps will be attached to the correction amp outputs. I added a very important section to the tutorial about the output routing (which soundcard channels end up going to which parts of the laser). Read that real quick and see if it doesn't clear this question up for you. There are two galvos, X and Y that direct the laser beam.

what are those pins for on the other side of the correction amp? is that the output that goes into the input on the scanner amps?
