I was thinking the same? Isnt that what a survival knife is for, to help you in the wilderness? The only thing I could think of was if someone lost the knife with the lens part open??? Money!!Hey no problem. You're right, it was to shave a couple pennies off at the factory. Starting fires with the glass is a good thing! Im pretty sure they knew that fire starting was a use for it, and when they 'upgraded' to plastic, they seemed to try to compensate by making the lens itself bigger. But no, it's not as clear, scratches easier, and isn't quite a perfect lens. I'm surprised they did that, usually everything on these tools are convenience and strength.

HaHa! but plastic is made from oil mostly and glass is made from sand? Witch one is harder to produce and manufacter?Well, I don't entirely blame them. That is what runs the world after all, money money money. That changing to plastic probably got the big boss and his buddies new jet skis this summer
But there is so much sand in world!!!:banghead:Yeah the plastic is definitely cheaper, it can just be moulded and boom, done. Glass has got to grinded and shaped and whatnot

now im going out to did in the back yard:beer: I know all in funThere's a whole lotta carbon in this world, but that doesn't mean diamonds are everywhere! The ingredients may be plentiful, but the processes to make and shape it are difficult.
