What's the scariest PC game you've ever played?

So I haven't done this for a while, but I'm going to be inviting friends over soon to do a game play-through...

I'd like to find a very captivating and exciting, horror game to play. I've read online... checked the top 10's for horror genre, but they're pretty outdated and not many people can agree that they are scary. I WANT SCARY!

I remember about 10 years ago playing a game that scared the crap outta me. It was set in a house and you could hear a girl screaming. You investigate the sound and it takes you into a glass house where a monster drops from the ceiling and you have to scare it off with an old school axe. You can also do magic spells like fire. But for the life of me I can't remember the name of it!

I understand that there are a lot of games we Australians haven't seen because many European games are not translated to English, so I'm hoping there's a game out there that someone might know, that will really scare the crap outta me!

I mainly enjoy the physiological horror games as their stories lines tend to be very well built. Jump scare games are ok... but I do enjoy a physiological bashing :D

Please leave your suggestions below.... I'd really like to hear your opinions!

PS: Games like Slender are not considered scary....

The new Sim City...............

But, really. The scariest game I've played is Amnesia: Dark Decent, mainly because you can't fight back.

So I've heard.... hows the story line? The consensus is that Amnesia is the scariest by far on the market... but looking at the trailers... I don't think it is.

By the way I figured out what the game was that I played ~10 years ago!

It's called undying...

Kids now wouldn't find this scary at all, but back then... this was good graphics and nothing else really was in its league!

The first couple of F.E.A.R games (and their expansion packs) are $hit scary if you play them in a darkened room, with headphones :scared:

You guys never heard of Amnesia? Its not your typical horror game but its more psychological. It always gives me a tingling feeling in the balls whenever I play the game. Try it out and you might not be able to sleep tonight :D

I haven't played very many scary games, but Amnesia the Dark descent was the scariest I've played, it starts off fine but gets to be really creepy. It's only 10$ I think, so it's not a huge loss if you don't like it.

Oh yes. You will get all the psychological bashing you want, bob.

Awesome... I'll grab that game then.

Anything else you would suggest?

I don't know about scary, but to me StarCraft, the original StarCraft, and then, the Brood War expansion - in multiplayer - were the most intense games.

A truly even match, on a massive field, with maxed out resources is something that is hard to describe... many purists would argue that money maps are no fun... but the map total unit limitation, as well as the 200 supply limit per species, kept is very amusing... longest game I played ran over four hours, started out 4v4 and quickly became a 2v2.

I loved it!

Agreed, the first one being the best.

Alien vs predator with the marine before you get the smart gun.
Another winner... loved it!!!

And now for my entry... System Shock 2.
You guys heard of Bioshock, right? (also pretty scary in their own right) - well, System Shock was the original, System Shock 2 having taken it one level higher ... Runners up, AvP, F.E.A.R., Bioshock 1&2, Dead Space, Far Cry, Stalker, ...

Condemned: Criminal Origins. though I played on 360. I think Dead Space is scary too, but not as much, as the game is third person. Criminal Origins is First Person, so it's more like it is happening to you, not that guy on the screen. surround sound for this one!!!
