My day job is in vacuum repair...this is about the only thing to do with a Dyson when it comes in the shop.
 
Upright or canister?

I try to match the vacuum to my customers' needs rather than focusing on a brand.

The shit brands to avoid are:
Bissell
Shark
Dyson
Dirt Devil
Eureka
Hoover

The basic rule of thumb is to purchase a vacuum like any other long-term appliance purchase and go ahead and spend the money upfront for a quality product, and forego the future expenses of shit parts and regular service. And, always keep labor and parts costs in mind for when repairs to pop up.

I literally have dozens of dead Dysons taking up space in my shop...it's freakin' rediculous..and even more so....The idiots who just have to have one, despite my insisting they make an informed decision...
 
Well I have had my dyson for like 6 years and it still works as the first day I got it....
Would it be like the wicked lasers, never buy one... I have two...:)
 
It's not a matter of whether it operates for 6 years. It's a matter of how poorly it performs for 6 years. And, if you think their new models are gonna last that long, I've got news for you...

I don't want to get into a vacuum cleaner theory lesson here, but trust in what I say. I have no reason to make shit up.

Well I believe you, but I have it and don't intend to change it until it dies, ahhh just to make you laugh a bit more I also have a Hoover ...:) told you if someone says not to buy one I get two... Hahahaha
 
Hoover is, or rather was, a good vacuum company...back before real filtration, and before they fell into the trap of trying to compete with Dyson, and abandon all of the things they did well, to rush out poorly designed machines.

Again, many of these things will last for years. What you're not seeing is the dirt left behind, the dirt bypassing the filters through the housings, damage to your expensive trim, etc.

My vacuum is a zero particulate machine that would suck the hair off of a gypsy, and doubles as an air purifier....all the while, being a tremendously reliable machine that gives virtually no problems, ever.
 
What is it? You've only said what the bad brands are, now I'm curious :)

It's a hacked Miele Mercury w/ a 1300W Vortex motor and automatic power adjustments.

I could get you into a new, comparable model for $1500.
