I don't think a single Flexmod can deliver 3.2A total (1.6A for each diode) as you say.....

not sure though I never owned a Flexmod but anyway that seems a little too much ... correct me if I am wrong :)

Using a Flexmod N3 at those ratings. Each diode should be receiving 1.6A as I'm using 18V input. They connected in series.
I wanted them both on one driver so I could modulate them simultaneously.
But thanks for the advise....Perhaps I should try 2 seperate flexmods...

The Flexmode P3 can deliver 4 Amps... according to the User
Manual I found doing a Google search... (it was right at the
top of the Google Search results)

TBH I have never used a flexmod, so I cant inject much on that...
However, if both LD's are seeing 1.6A then you should at least be
seeing 2.5W at minimum.. May I ask where you got your LD's?

The problem with buying single LD's is that the seller probably tests
the outputs of each before picking the 'keepers'. Then sell off the
inefficient as an 'a-140' or what have you.

I keep all the better LD's for my higher power builds and use the low
efficiency for other projects.. If you buy LD's from anybody who builds
labby's or sells them with kits, you can bet that a few if not most will
be lower efficiency.

IF you are going to do a project which takes lots of alignment and time
to setup, you dont want to overdrive too much so the best idea is to use
the highest efficiency LD's you have.

Even if the efficiency is low in your build, 1.8W is still oddly low IMO..

Not sure as of yet, but this would be an option for sure.. Im still debating
on weather or not to offer the dual as kits, or offer complete lasers
with FDA based 'features' such as delay, interlock etc. I will have to see what
kind of pricing I get..

Just speaking for myself. I find the required delay to be a horrible safety feature.

I was reading flex DRIVE and not Flexmod ....:wtf: even when I was reading your post all I saw was FlexDrive ... and then after reading it 5 times it hit me :D:D:D:D sorry my bad .....:beer::beer:

I've been following this thread with newbieish overwhelmedness...

A horrible (or wonderful) thought occured to me yesterday afternoon. There is an element of competitiveness in most things in life.

What if (and they will) someone tried to out-do this (in a PORTABLE form-factor - I've read andy-con's "8x 445 diode" thread)... using more diodes... using a motorcycle battery or something as a power source? Heck, with a back-pack, one could use MULTIPLE *car batteries*.:drool:

Okay, now, y'all run along and build your little death-rays... Grandpappy Darth will be SO proud of you...

just imagine the heat from 8x 445nm diodes in a portable device!! maybe duty cycle of 10 seconds :D:D:D but what the heck you you got your mighty back pack there :D:D:D full of acid batteries just spill some on the enemies :D:D just kidding... but it's a stupid idea!

They make *sealed* *no-spill* car batteries.

Amateur radio operators use "Gel-Cells" all the time, for high-surge high-current applications (emergency / portable operation for transmitters). Actually, replace what I said about "car batteries", and insert "Gel-Cells". (Gel-Cells are basically sealed lead-acid batteries, with the electrolyte in a "gel" form... you DO have to watch how you charge them... )

The 8 X 445nm builds from Andy_Con are used in Laser Projectors
that I'm pretty sure run longer than 10 seconds at a time...:whistle:

You could run many more diodes easily in a handheld if you used a 26650 A123 LiFePO4. They can discharge 60-70amps continuous. At that draw there wont be much battery life but even with boost drivers you could pull off like 20+ maxed out diodes.

*I did not crunch the numbers so I could be on the high or even low side but should be close*

20x1.7= 34W of 445nm before optics losses. The issue here would be heat dissipation and and trying to get those diodes and optics in something that could be argued as portable. Batteries are not longer a limiting factor.

Realistically that kind of power in a handheld would be stupidly obnoxious. I hope handhelds never come close to that output. Lab units are a lot safer because you cant take them to inappropriate places nor can you weld the beam around wildly like so many idiots do on youtube.


PS: A123 just came out with a new 32113 cell that is rated at 4400mAh so going by their 30C discharge rate thats 132A! Li-ions have superior storage but such a pitiful 2C rating.

If you are going the route of a >4 LD 445 potable build
I would definitely use TEC/Fan cooling...
Don't forget to add that to the battery current drain....

Really I dont advocate building anything like that. I hope the MOAR POWA trend stops at this incredible 3.5W.
