UFO Spoofs on the internet

Ben, I do like the term UFO, there is no baggage which goes with that, not if you take it literally. I have also seen some weird stuff go on due to atmospheric lensing, once saw what looked like a city full of sky scrapes on the horizon far above the arctic circle, it was just a little village 70 miles away and beyond line of sight, but the atmosphere was ducting it in to us and magnifying the height of the small houses to look like a big city.

Well, if you use the term strictly, what you and i have seen were not -flying- objects, but just a mirage of something that was solidly anchored to the ground.

Without figuring out the fata morgana effect at play there they do appear to be in mid air, but there was never anything flying at all. That's only in hindsight though, at the time i noticed it, it really appeared as lights floating in the sky. Could have been an alien aircraft with high pressure sodium headlights ;)

Such mirages are more common in places with a big temperature difference between night and day, like deserts. In the moderate dutch climate they are quite rare: while the land is pretty flat, the temperature gradients usually arent there and usually there are buildings obstructing view anything near the horizon.

I made the mistake of doing a search of YouTube videos for examples of pure BS, but made the mistake of somehow linking it to one of my email accounts. Now, years later, I still get these phony YouTube videos of alien spacecraft in our atmosphere. I have yet to find a way to get them to stop.
