I think of the module as just being the holder of the diode and it can come in all those forms and more just to give you options for mounting. Some have the diode already pressed in and some dont. In other words it's not one thing. The link you provided is extremely common and when a complete unit (diode and driver) are already installed you usually only have to connect 2 wires to a pre-made host with the 2 wire option such as ehgemus offers right on this forum. An easy option especially when you don't own the proper tools/meters to build and set up a complete module from scratch. Basically plug and play. At least this is the way I think of a module. It's a host for a diode and then you install it into something else which is the host for the module and either can have the driver installed in it to make a complete unit. The heatsink for the module may be a part of the module, separate or part of the host.

wow I have alot of homework to do thanks everyone! I enjoy an learn alot from this site I follow the startrek modding sites also I have seen Jayrobs products but again you need to provide your own laser. So info from here is needed. the only pens i have now are from TMart 5mw ones i have 3 that work out of the 6 i bought. I know one is overspec much brighter than the others. Can any one answer this question? the one i believe is over spec can put a small hole in a thin black plastic shopping bag and it popped a white balloon that i darkend a circle with a black sharpie. It took a while at very close range allmost touching the pen and i do have a little tremor in my hand. What would a guess be at what this pen is putting out to do that? forgot to mention its a green laser pen. any thoughts? thanks everyone:thinking:

Hmmm I would say 25 to 35 mW, there's really no telling unless you have an LPM

do you really think that much 25mw to 35mw If i ever find someone in my area into lasers and has a meter i am curious Do you have any around that range that you have tried?

Yeah i would say around 25mW to 35mW because it can pop balloons. I'm not sure about the lpm thing you'd have to look that up

He is talking about the driver, all drivers use more power than what goes into the laser, the excess power is dissipated as heat, every driver operates within a certain voltage range, there are several types of drivers. Linear drivers especially can mostly operate at higher voltages, they are efficient if operated at just the right voltage needed but at higher voltage they draw more power that is just dissipated as heat.

He prefers the 5V modules because you can power them with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, instead of two AAA or some other disposable batteries.
